4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draught pour from Monk’s Kettle. Pours pretty much black with a one-finger dark mocha head. Nose is chocolatey, with notes of coffee, lactic notes, pumpkin, and mild spice. Similarly, the taste is not nearly as spicy as a pumpkin beers usually are. The porter really shines through here, with the pumpkin well integrated and as much like pumpkin itself as spices. Great combination. Seems like it’s boozier than 7.8%, though not in a bad way.

UPDATED: MAR 1, 2016 Tasted from bottle. Pours black with khaki head. Aroma is chocolate, cinnamon, caramel, spices. Taste is moderately bitter with nice sweet malt backbone. Very complex. Flavors of chocolate, coffee, cinnamon, all spice, pumpkin, caramel, pepper, maple syrup. Excellent pumpkin beer. Would love to have this head to head with Southern Tier Warlock but I think this tops it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Always considered pumpkin beer a beverage abomination...the GABF style nazis didn’t even award a gold medal in this category this year. But this pumpkin beer is worth seeking out, especially on draft. And it’s no phony. You can actually taste the pumpkin.
