COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
OK, what do you get when we toss pale malted barley, pumpkin and spices into a stainless steel cauldron then stir in some magic? Uh, Trickster! The “magic” is actually mischievous Belgian yeast at play with cardamom, nutmeg and coriander. This spooky cool brew will make your glass glow bright despite the gloominess of the season.

Designed to conjure up a little fun during the darkening days of autumn, Trickster is a frivolous concoction of earthy pumpkin, comforting malt, and lively spices. This makes Trickster the brew to accompany your post-winterizing duties, family fall dinners, ghost stories, U-boast-iT stories, and “supposedly haunted” garage parties.

But the flavor range of Trickster also pairs well with citrusy and/or spicy cuisine. Try a glowing glass with your favorite dishes that incorporate nutmeg, cardamom or coriander—like Thai curries, Swedish meatballs, gingerbread…or seek out new recipes on the web. The possibilities are endless. Unfortunately our Trickster supply will end soon. Get it and enjoy it now!

UPDATED: NOV 18, 2009 Bomber. Clear amber color with a small head. Aroma of belgian clovey-banana yeast and some light sugar type malt. The spices are there but lighter and I’d be hard pressed to identify them over the spicy yeast. I don’t get any pumpkin.
I was kind of hoping for more out of this. The description sounded a bit like Iron Hill’s Ichabod, which I enjoyed very much.
But it’s their first year for this beer. Maybe they’ll make some adjustments in the future?

Nose is lightly belgian spice, pumpkin, ginger, clove. Grainy malty cereal honey and light alcohol. Ppurs golden some head, no lace. Pumpkin ginger clove banana spice. A little menthol. Very crackery and dry/thin. Sweet and spicy but this doesn’t work that well.

Bottle. Pours hazy orange amber with a medium beige head, creamy with nice lacing. Aroma is spices, allspice, clove, cinnamon, herbs. Flavor is the same, light sweet and light zesty bitter, herbal and quite spicy with strong earthy yeast notes as well. Medium body. Meh.

22 oz bottle. Pours a clear light amber with a small off white head. Aroma is earthy Belgian yeast with hints of pumpkin and spices. The flavor is sweet malt and lots of yeast, very light pumpkin taste. Pretty light and actively carbonated with a crisp finish. Like others have said, this is more of a Belgian ale with just a touch of pumpkin.

Color cloudy dark amber. Aroma spice, malt, yeast, fruit. Taste apple, caramel, grapefruit, faint spice. Sweet and fruity. Smooth on the tongue, medium viscosity, not dry.

Big thanks to Ira for another MSBC bottle, poured into a tulip. Pours a very light, clear amber with a big fluffy white head that recedes slowly to a collar and leaves a little bit of lacing. The aroma is fairly muted for a pumpkin ale. It really smells like a Belgian golden with some pumpkin and spices thrown in. The spicy Belgain yeast and some fruity esters are just as prevalent as the pumpking and spices. The taste is more of the same though the spices come out a little more than in the aroma. The pumpkin is very subtle hardly noticeable and, again, the slightly sweet/spicy Belgian yeast backbone is the most noticeable flavor in the taste. The finish is lightly spicy, with both yeast and holiday spices present. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with good carbonation and very much like an average Belgian golden ale. This one certainly pales in comparison to Treat, though that’s certainly a difficult comparison. It certainly doesn’t sit squarely in the pumpkin ale category as the Belgian yeast is much more prominent than any pumpkin or spice flavors. As pumpkin ales go, it’s fairly average.

Bottle thanks to savnac, thanks for another great beer Ira! Pours a faintly hazy light copper with a small white head. Aroma is spicy, corriander, light malt, vegetal, nutmeg, and lightly peppery. Flavor is also spicy and vegetal with notes of malt and nutmeg. Pumpkin is subtle; not too much. IT’s OK, not my favorite offering from this brewery.

Draft at GPBF. Pours a cloudy medium gold with a loose sudsy white head. Artichokey funky nose. Tangy and almost vegetal--not DMS, it smells like esters that got a little sideways. Creamy medium body with lively carb. Mid-palate is a big bruising smoosh of artichokey tanginess. Spices in there as well.

Aroma dominated by cardimon and nutmeg with moderate clove. Coppers range with off white head. Pretty. Spice dominates flavor with cardimon and clove. Proving yet again I don’t like pumpkin ales.
