COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally brewed in 2009 to celebrate Specialty Imports’ 30th Anniversary, XXX Black Double IPA is now produced each winter. XXX offers bold, American hop character — comfortably cloaked in dark, luxurious malt. This exciting “winter warmer” will take the chill right out of your bones. Curl up with this session-beer-meets-nightcap.

Sometimes XXX just means 30.

In 2009, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Specialty Imports’ specialty wine and beer import business, Midnight Sun Brewing Company brewed a very special beer--a black double IPA--to honor this Alaska company’s long-term success. In 2010 this beer was added to MSBC’s "seasonal double IPA" line-up.

Bottle at the Cotteridge Convention thanks to Leighton. It pours near black with a small tan head. The nose is rich roast, dark chocolate, dark chocolate. ash, treacle and dark fruits. The taste is bitter, rich roast, varnish, tar, charred wood, toffee, orange rind, sherbet, good deal of bitterness, coffee, touch of umami and some burnt stuff. Medium-fullish body and fine carbonation. Works very well for me. Tasty and very drinkable. CDA win.

Bottle share at Cotteridge Wines. Black, small ring of white head. Aroma is pine, rose, meaty background. Mostly floral. Body is medium, slightly foamy, low carbonation. Taste is sweet toffee malts, flowery, soft bitterness. Very drinkable.

24th Jan 2015: bottle shared at the Cotteridge Wine meet, cheers Leighton for this brew. Poured a rich, deep, dark brown with a tanned top. The aroma seemed to have a slightly burnt hint with mild citrus and chocolate notes. The taste had a sweet, yet bitter chocolate lead, with again some citrus and singed flavouring. The finish was moving towards a bitterness and bite not noticed at first in the sip.

Bottle share. Cotteridge Beano. More down the stout end of the spectrum, for me. Chocolate malts. Some bitterness. Thick palate.

Leighton (18221) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - JAN 25, 2015
Bottle shared at the Cotteridge Convention 2014. Picked up at New Beer Distributors in NYC. Pours clear, deep brown with a creamy tan cap. The nose holds some old burnt pine, citrus rind and light cocoa. Medium sweet flavor with bittersweet chocolate, earth, dry pine and orange rind. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Bitter finish with further cocoa, scorched earth, more citrus rind, burnt wood. Good stuff.

Bottle from City Beer, SF. Dark brown with a beige head. Marcipane, vanilla, burnt caramel and molasses aromas and flavours. Sweet malts are nicely balanced, but still this beer reminds me more of a Sticke than a black IPA. Good, though.

Bomber picked up on sale for $6.99 instead of $12.99. I stopped purchasing MS years ago because they’re all overpriced, but snagged this when I saw it for 1/2 off. Again, pretty good beer, nice and roasty toasty with hints of burnt cocoa and hops, big hoppy backend, but would never pay $11-$13 for.

"a fairly well done beer that just didn’t quite stack up to the big boys. given MS’s penchant for charging double digits for their bottles, probably not something i’ll try on it’s own. medium roasted character and bittering floral hops well balanced. tasty, but lacks the wow factor."
