COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally brewed in 2009 to celebrate Specialty Imports’ 30th Anniversary, XXX Black Double IPA is now produced each winter. XXX offers bold, American hop character — comfortably cloaked in dark, luxurious malt. This exciting “winter warmer” will take the chill right out of your bones. Curl up with this session-beer-meets-nightcap.

Sometimes XXX just means 30.

In 2009, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Specialty Imports’ specialty wine and beer import business, Midnight Sun Brewing Company brewed a very special beer--a black double IPA--to honor this Alaska company’s long-term success. In 2010 this beer was added to MSBC’s "seasonal double IPA" line-up.

This beautifully dark black beer has a roasted malty aroma. It really hits you with the hoppy bitterness but finishes with a complex smooth coffee aftertaste. I'm not a huge fan of IPA but this is a good beer I would choose to have again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Fairly priced bottle purchased on ebay in early ’11 before it got shut down. Poured very deep brown, nearly black. Lacing and head were average. Aromas of pine resin, roasted and sweet malts, wood, and ginger. Taste was lots of citrus hops, light cocoa or coffe, and creamy but smoked malts. Really good coating on the tongue. Medium body, light carbonation. Nice black ipa from Midnight Sun but I prefer the blacks that have no roast or sweetness.

Tap. Pours opaque black with a small tan head. Aroma is light with notes of roasted malt, pine, perhaps coffee. Flavor is about the same, hop presence more through bitterness than specific aromatics. Kind of a hoppy porter with roasty and chocolate notes, but no real coffee. Full bodied, creamy mouth feel. Light , medium bitterness. nice beer on its own merits, not the best example of the style.

Bottle shared by mdfb79. Thanks Dan! The beer is a dark brown hue with 1/4" or so of tan head and sparse lacing. The aroma consists of roasted malt, with pine and citrus hops. The flavor brings some nice chocolate, with a healthy dose of roasted malt. The hops get lost in the shuffle here, as they are overshadowed by roast and chocolate. The finish has some of the hop bitterness I was hoping for, along with a lingering chocolaty roast. Overall, this was a decent brew, but a bit out of balance, as again, the hops were buried in the flavor too much. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 07-12-2011

Beer pours very dark brown with a massive, totally retained tan colored head. Aroma is dicotomous. Very roasy, maltly with a fabulous hop spruce aroma. Very yummy smelling. Flavor is sweet and bitter. This is going to one of my highest ratings since going bonkers for Alpha Klaus years back. This is a helleva good beer IMO. Thanks so much to my wife for bringing it back from Alaska for me. xoxo

Deep dark brown coloured body with a deep amber/lighter brown bottom and a nice, two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, toffee, earth, citrus and piney hops and a decent amount of caramel and alcohol. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong roasty malt with perhaps a touch of peat in the mix with a lot of deep earthy and piney hops that balance out the deep malt. Aftertaste shows a great complexity with the cereal and roasty malt battling out but in the end, losing to the deep earthy and citrusey hop flavour that is huge. Sweetness also fights it out with bitterness and alcohol but the bitterness prevails. Overall, a very well crafted and complex beer that shows very well - nice to have this one, as always from the last Frontier state. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Brown Jug (Old Seward) in Anchorage, Alaska on 18-June-2011 sampled at home in Washington on 12-June-2012.

Bottle: Poured a dirty black with reddish clearing hints to the edges. Aroma is edgy with hops filling the nose, yet loads of malts (chocolate, roast, caramel?). Taste is gritty with huge hops, sprinkles of chocolate and coffee keep it balanced along with malts. Very warming to the palate throughout.

Big beer, very tasty and well integrated roast and citrus hops. The hops rule, the roast is substantive and yet not obtrusive. Trade with Andrew.

Bomber bottle and served in Stone IRS snifter: Pour deep brown with some amber highlight around the edges, some frothy off-white head, okay lace. The aroma has notes of resiny, piney, and grassy hops. Heavy roast and toast malts, moderate char and some biscuit. Minimal fruit sans a touch of plum. The taste is straight forward hop bitterness, light coffee, and moderate roasted malts. A tad ashy and a bit boozy on the finish. The mouth feel is brisk and aggressive, if the finish was cleaner i would jizz in my pants. A damn nice brew, one of better of the genre I have tried so far. Methinks an oaked version would rox sox.

6oz pour from the brewpub. Dark brown mahogany edges, thin head. Aroma of citrus, roast, some odd earthy/wooden notes . Taste is decent, citrusy, not too much roast, molasses. Not bad but did not wow me.
