COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally brewed in 2009 to celebrate Specialty Imports’ 30th Anniversary, XXX Black Double IPA is now produced each winter. XXX offers bold, American hop character — comfortably cloaked in dark, luxurious malt. This exciting “winter warmer” will take the chill right out of your bones. Curl up with this session-beer-meets-nightcap.

Sometimes XXX just means 30.

In 2009, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Specialty Imports’ specialty wine and beer import business, Midnight Sun Brewing Company brewed a very special beer--a black double IPA--to honor this Alaska company’s long-term success. In 2010 this beer was added to MSBC’s "seasonal double IPA" line-up.

Bottle. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma of chocolate and citrus hops. This has to be one of the better Black IPA’s I have had. Good thick flavor of coffee, chocolate, roasted malt blended with a fair amount of citrus hops. Well done.

Bottle shared with a guy from our local facebook beer group. Pours black with a brown head. Aroma of citrusy hops and dark chocolate. Full bodied with a slick texture. Flavor of dark chocolate and dark roasted malts, countered by a firm citrusy bitterness. I usually don’t like my black IPAs this roasty, but it works here for some reason.

750ml bottle shared at Dstructo/Daknole tasting. Been looking forward to trying this beer for a while. It was just..ehh. For a black IPA there wasn’t much hop presence in the aroma or flavor. Was a tad sweet with hints of licorice. Not too bad but nothing special either.

Bottle on the RBSG bus. Pours a black to brown with a thin beige head. Big resinous sticky citrus on the nose. Roast and chocolate, toast. Roast with some sweet chewy candy and malt. Tasty. Long slow coffee bitterness.

Bottle shared during the RBSG bus trip. Poured a clear deep red brown with a small foamy beige head. Awesome aroma loaded with lots of roastiness, chocolate and tons of grassy hops....blended very nicely. Full bodied that is slightly milky and chalky at the same time, strong carbonation and a lingering finish. Flavor of dark toast, chocolate and a bitter citrus rind finish. Awesome beer.

This poured a very dark brown almost black with a beige heead. Aroma was medium roast and lots of fresh piney and citrusy hops, intruiging. Flavor was very nicely balanced between the sweetness/roast of the dark beer and the nice piney hops,. Great Black IPA

Bottle from wavers and one on the Philly RBSG bus. Thanks! Dark brown with a sudsy tan head. Nose shows notes of pine, roast, cocoa, coffee, some caramel sweetness. Flavor is very bitter and ashy, ending with a dose of boozy caramel. Oily, slick body.
