COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally brewed in 2009 to celebrate Specialty Imports’ 30th Anniversary, XXX Black Double IPA is now produced each winter. XXX offers bold, American hop character — comfortably cloaked in dark, luxurious malt. This exciting “winter warmer” will take the chill right out of your bones. Curl up with this session-beer-meets-nightcap.

Sometimes XXX just means 30.

In 2009, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Specialty Imports’ specialty wine and beer import business, Midnight Sun Brewing Company brewed a very special beer--a black double IPA--to honor this Alaska company’s long-term success. In 2010 this beer was added to MSBC’s "seasonal double IPA" line-up.

Opaque black beer with a short lived creamy tan head. Soft palate. Semi dry. An aroma and taste of grassy hops. Smooth dry malt rides alongside. Reminded by strongly of ’Dark Hops’ by ’Beer Here’ but this is just a tad better. Smoother.

Bottle shared at the Cotteridge Convention 2014. Picked up at New Beer Distributors in NYC. Pours clear, deep brown with a creamy tan cap. The nose holds some old burnt pine, citrus rind and light cocoa. Medium sweet flavor with bittersweet chocolate, earth, dry pine and orange rind. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Bitter finish with further cocoa, scorched earth, more citrus rind, burnt wood. Good stuff.

Taste comprises pine needle, treacle toffee, light charr, chocolate, bitter citric peel. Medium + bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent boozey sequel CAN but there’s plenty out there that deliver more for less !

A: The pour is a dark brown color featuring a substantial amount of reddish hue, with a thin layer of tan foam. S: The nose is not all that much like other Black (D)IPAs I’ve come across. Fairly roasty with a bit of coffee, dark chocolate, and smoke. The hops are rather woody, and not the usual resinous piney sort. T: Again, this beer leans more towards the "black" part of the name rather than the IPA. Soft roast notes along with some coffee and hints of smoke. The hops are subtle, providing a bit of bitterness and citrus flavor. M: The body is slightly watery with a moderate level of carbonation. D: This was a total miss for me. I usually enjoy this style and Midnight Sun has made some pretty nice beers, but I can’t say this is one of them.

Bomber from Malt & Vine. Pours very dark brown with a slight creamy/bubbly tan head. Nice aromas of floral/fruity hop over chocolate? Med plus body. Flavor is fruity hop over some rather chocolatey very toasted/burnt malt. There’s a lot of flavor here. Tastes good.

On tap at The Taphouse, pours dark brown/black with a small head. Aroma of light hops, some roasted flavours and a bit of smoke. Flavour of nuts, wood, roastiness and somewhat bitter hops that lingers. Excellent brew.
