COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally brewed in 2009 to celebrate Specialty Imports’ 30th Anniversary, XXX Black Double IPA is now produced each winter. XXX offers bold, American hop character — comfortably cloaked in dark, luxurious malt. This exciting “winter warmer” will take the chill right out of your bones. Curl up with this session-beer-meets-nightcap.

Sometimes XXX just means 30.

In 2009, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Specialty Imports’ specialty wine and beer import business, Midnight Sun Brewing Company brewed a very special beer--a black double IPA--to honor this Alaska company’s long-term success. In 2010 this beer was added to MSBC’s "seasonal double IPA" line-up.

Bottle from City Beer, San Francisco. Aroma of licorice, roasty grains, and tropical fruit. Taste is syrupy sweet with roasty notes. Roasty bitterness only at the very end. Feels flat. Not quite as good as I was hoping for, but still enjoyable.

UPDATED: FEB 18, 2015 Bottle, opaque black, head the color of brown paper bag, nice lace. Aroma toasted barley, sprucy minty hops, dark fruit. Taste is porter, chocolate, coffee, raisin, fig, faint spruce, citrus rind. Palate is smooth, nice, carbonation adequate. Finish is dry, bitter. The hops make this dry and bitter, but it’s still roasty. Pretty nice beer! Re tasting sampler at brewery on tap. This is super juicy and fresh, and still dark! Better than I remember.

24th Jan 2015: bottle shared at the Cotteridge Wine meet, cheers Leighton for this brew. Poured a rich, deep, dark brown with a tanned top. The aroma seemed to have a slightly burnt hint with mild citrus and chocolate notes. The taste had a sweet, yet bitter chocolate lead, with again some citrus and singed flavouring. The finish was moving towards a bitterness and bite not noticed at first in the sip.

Bottle share. Cotteridge Beano. More down the stout end of the spectrum, for me. Chocolate malts. Some bitterness. Thick palate.

Bottle shared at the Cotteridge Convention 2014. Picked up at New Beer Distributors in NYC. Pours clear, deep brown with a creamy tan cap. The nose holds some old burnt pine, citrus rind and light cocoa. Medium sweet flavor with bittersweet chocolate, earth, dry pine and orange rind. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Bitter finish with further cocoa, scorched earth, more citrus rind, burnt wood. Good stuff.
