COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Bottle @ joes thx to joes. Amber to brown colour with a small off-white head. Smells wine, wood, alochol. Tastes sweet, alcoholic, intense. Full body, soft carbo.

This is great beer, but to be honest I really think some of the barleys from Norway are a lot better. This one really smells of alcohol, more than I’ve experienced before, as well as plums, dark grapes, heavy bitterness, great level of sweetness, and caramel, cocoa and coffee. Great, and well balanced, but not as full bodied and balanced as the best ones.

For some reason I’ve hardly had any barley wines since I started my ratebeer career, i.e. I’ve hardly had any barley wines whatsoever. If this one is representative for the style however, I’m looking forward to explore this type of beer in meticulous detail! The off-white, frothy head is a bit small and it ends up as a ring of ever-lasting bubbles at the walls of the glass, plus some filmy remnants that are partially covering the beautiful, clear, dark amber to red body. The strong aroma is malty, hoppy and sugary sweet with some nice notes of overripe fruits, faint dried dark fruits. It smells vinous, with notes of port wine. The taste is very, very sweet, and even if the long-lasting finish is moderate to heavy bitter it’s not quite enough to tame the massive sweetness. Strong flavours of overripe grapefruit and other fruits, sweet sweet caramel (Smørbukk), toffee, vanilla and faint dried dark fruits. Wonderful mouthfeel, it’s smooth and creamy, softly carbonated with tiny bubbles and the body is full. An amazing beer, that I probably would have liked even better if it was a bit less sweet or a bit more bitter.

Format 50 cl, given slight amber tone with light foam is not very long lasting style feature. Good caramel aroma with hints of chocolate. In the mouth sweet caramel notes of short duration, well integrated spirit.

500ml bottle @Lúpulo Feroz, Oviedo. Caramel, liquor, some spicy aromas. Pours dark amber, quite clear, with nice off white head, persistent, poor lacing. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Taste is caramel, malty, liquor, some spicy. very sweet. Enjoyable. Warm aftertaste.

50cl bottle form Bierzwerg pours with a crystal clear copper body that supports a thin light tan head of foam. The aroma offers up lots of sweetness coming from notes like caramel, white chocolate, sugary toffee, blue wacky taffy and a bit of nuttiness. Intriguing, I get very little if any dark fruity esters. The taste is a big hit of sweetness that’s a lot like the nose where caramel, white chocolate, toffee, wacky taffy and then it slides into a light degree of brown sugar coated prunes and figs. Interesting stuff but it seems the esteriness could be a bit more forward to add more balance.
