COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Editor's note: Voted best new beer 2007 by the Danish Society of Beer Enthusiasts.

English: Imperial Stout is a dark and rich beer with a beautiful dark cream coloured head. It’s brewed from several types of roast malts and conditioned on oak, which adds to the heavy body. The Imperial Stout has a strong and growing aftertaste of coffee, bitter chocolate and vanilla. Suited for game, strong cheeses and chocolate desserts. Or may be enjoyed alone in a cognac snifter in front of the fireplace.

A long-lasting, elegant, homogeneous tan head lives above the clearish dark brown. Not all that close to black in colour, but that does not keep it from proposing a roast-focused aroma playing the dark chocolate and coffee tune accompanied by a confident, forward liquorous alcohol. Call it a coffee liquor if you will. Relatively lean palate for the genre, not without love handles, but far from the syrupy examples that abound nowadays and never overly sugary. Has a spicy kick (anise, woodsy, black pepper) which I have trouble figuring whether it comes from its otherwise subtle hops or some kind of alcohol-phenolic side effect. Not very punchy in terms of hop flavours, yet a very bitter example, for its bitterness hops, of course, but perhaps more especially for its dark espresso-like roasted malts, sharper than in the vast majority of impys out there. A very competent example, perhaps lacking in fruit to fit my very personal preferences for strong roasty ales, but cohesive and flawless.

500ml bottle shared by Scott. A solid impy stout. Lighter and fruitier then most. Lacking roast intensity. An interesting stout.

Most likely one of the very best Imperial stout that I have tasted with the Nøgne IS..

500ml bottle. Started with a little gushing. Dark brown body, big chocolate head, some sediment. Aroma of mineral water, licorice, blackberries, toast and a touch of spices. Taste a moderate burned toast upfront, washed away immediately by a wave of caramel sweetness, licorice, cocoa liquor, a touch of herbal bitterness in the backstage, a little woodsy. Nice one.

Mahagony brown with ruby red influences and a fading tan head. On the nose aromas of roasted toffee caramelised malts arise giving way to some light woody notes enhanced by some noticeable vanilla notes. The texture is softly carbonated and medium bodied surprising you for 9.5%. Offers some sweetnes with light bitter roasted aromas all pretty well balanced! The finish is ligtly slick and lasting pleasantly! Enjoyable!!!

500ml bottle. Dirty deep brown with a thin ring of off-white foam. Flavors are green apples, alcohol, molasses, chocolate, ashes and roasted malts with woodsy and fruity notes. Medium body, soft carbonation, oily texture.

(bottle) dark brown colour with a tall brown head; aroma starts with alcohol and smoked fruit, then roast; simple flavour with alcohol being the prominent feature - this is the worst imperial stout I have ever had and the first ever that I was not able to even finish - very disappointing

Aroma of chocolate, alcohol, slight fruit. Dark brown with tan head. Thick and rich, long aftertaste, dark chocolate, slightly oily in the mouth, some heat but overall quite smooth. Very nice.

500 ml bottle from LCBO, served cool in a tulip glass.

App.: Very deep mahogany with a decent tan head. Aroma: Weak...some nice maltiness but not dark enough, more Porter than Impy Stout, acetaldehyde, caramel and deep melanoidin, meh. Palate: Medium+ body with moderate+ carbonation. Flav.: Like the nose, chocolate and melanoidin, lacks the deep, dark maltiness of an imperial stout, acetaldehyde is far too noticeable, not good; sweet with decent bitterness, some astringency and fair bitterness with a reasonable roasted character, though lacking and with some acetaldehyde.

Messy.

Pitch black with a beige head. Smooth cocoa aromas with hints of vanilla. Super smooth palate, loads of powdered cocoa, cocoa nibs, just a bit of roast to balance it out. So smooth! Excellent. Bottle, best before november 2014!
