Editor's note: Voted best new beer 2007 by the Danish Society of Beer Enthusiasts.

English: Imperial Stout is a dark and rich beer with a beautiful dark cream coloured head. It’s brewed from several types of roast malts and conditioned on oak, which adds to the heavy body. The Imperial Stout has a strong and growing aftertaste of coffee, bitter chocolate and vanilla. Suited for game, strong cheeses and chocolate desserts. Or may be enjoyed alone in a cognac snifter in front of the fireplace.

A long-lasting, elegant, homogeneous tan head lives above the clearish dark brown. Not all that close to black in colour, but that does not keep it from proposing a roast-focused aroma playing the dark chocolate and coffee tune accompanied by a confident, forward liquorous alcohol. Call it a coffee liquor if you will. Relatively lean palate for the genre, not without love handles, but far from the syrupy examples that abound nowadays and never overly sugary. Has a spicy kick (anise, woodsy, black pepper) which I have trouble figuring whether it comes from its otherwise subtle hops or some kind of alcohol-phenolic side effect. Not very punchy in terms of hop flavours, yet a very bitter example, for its bitterness hops, of course, but perhaps more especially for its dark espresso-like roasted malts, sharper than in the vast majority of impys out there. A very competent example, perhaps lacking in fruit to fit my very personal preferences for strong roasty ales, but cohesive and flawless.

2015-04-26. Black body with a large foamy tan head that fades, leaving nice foamy lace on the glass. 4+ Aroma of rich dark malt, hints at licorice and dark fruit, mild dry dark roast malt. Moderate alcohol character. Flavour is similar, dry bitter roast up front, rich dark malt core his similar muted licorice touches as in the aroma, ephemeral notes of cocoa, moderate roast bitterness and hoppy bitterness that linger in the finish. Aftertaste is a melange of all of the above. Comes together very nicely. 9+ Smooth medium bodied palate, moderate carbonation. Very nice, grows better as you go on. Wow! Bottle from the LCBO, Toronto.

Bottle from Bierzwerg!
Pours deep black with a lovely brown head. Smell has lots of coffee and chocolate. Starts sweet with lots of chocolate, as well as coffee and some roasted malts. Goes into a sweet chocolatey finish with some slight notes of alcohol.

Strangely expensive bottle. Pours black with a medium brown head. Smell is metallic, with coffee beans. Taste should bee rich, but it was surpisengly poor and uncomplex. Palate is a bit too thin, but has a complex feeling. Overall a nice beer, but If I compare it with other Danish masterpieces....

500ml bottle. Pours almost black with hazy dark, dark brown around the rim when lit, and a creamy beige head. Aromas of molasses, minerality, cocoa, caramel candies, light ash, and a light boozy note. As for taste, alcohol out of the gates, with Fisherman’s Friends-like bitterness, molasses, and light caramel that leads into more molasses with espresso, and more of the hops. It’s not bad, but it’s not terribly complex for an imperial stout either, and the alcohol is very much present, maybe a little too much. A bit of a let down.

50 cl bottle from LCBO. Toronto, ON. 9.5% Alc./Vol. Pours an opaque dark brown colour with a small lasting mocha head. Aroma of coffee and vanilla. Taste matches the aroma with notes of roasted malts and ends with a dry and hoppy finish. Moderate carbonation. Concealment of high ABV is well done.

Bottle thanks to Onkelgobber. Appearance - opaque black with a nice fluffy fawn head. Nose - toffee and nuts rather than chocolate. Praline. Taste - more of the same with a blackjack liquorice edge that makes it balanced Palate - close to full bodied, big tangy yet dry roasty texture and a long dry finish. Overall -lovely and luscious.
