Editor's note: Voted best new beer 2007 by the Danish Society of Beer Enthusiasts.

English: Imperial Stout is a dark and rich beer with a beautiful dark cream coloured head. It’s brewed from several types of roast malts and conditioned on oak, which adds to the heavy body. The Imperial Stout has a strong and growing aftertaste of coffee, bitter chocolate and vanilla. Suited for game, strong cheeses and chocolate desserts. Or may be enjoyed alone in a cognac snifter in front of the fireplace.

A long-lasting, elegant, homogeneous tan head lives above the clearish dark brown. Not all that close to black in colour, but that does not keep it from proposing a roast-focused aroma playing the dark chocolate and coffee tune accompanied by a confident, forward liquorous alcohol. Call it a coffee liquor if you will. Relatively lean palate for the genre, not without love handles, but far from the syrupy examples that abound nowadays and never overly sugary. Has a spicy kick (anise, woodsy, black pepper) which I have trouble figuring whether it comes from its otherwise subtle hops or some kind of alcohol-phenolic side effect. Not very punchy in terms of hop flavours, yet a very bitter example, for its bitterness hops, of course, but perhaps more especially for its dark espresso-like roasted malts, sharper than in the vast majority of impys out there. A very competent example, perhaps lacking in fruit to fit my very personal preferences for strong roasty ales, but cohesive and flawless.

Bottle at home. Over 3 years old. Pours a deep red brown to black colour with a medium, creamy, beige head. Lots of chocolate truffles in the aroma along with, coffee, chocolate cake, ash, alcohol and roasted malt and hints of vanilla. More roasted malt in the flavour and with more chocolate, and a ash-like finish. Has a silky mouth feel, and a light to medium bitterness. An imperial stout with a lot of chocolate, but the flavour is not as complex as expected. A solid IS anyway.

Flaske, 50 cl. Tak Palle. Sort-brun med et kraftigt, blødt beige skum. Karamel, lakrids-sødme, grapefrugt, øllebrød, vanilie og nogle jordede noter. Meget fyldig. Chokopulver. Ok, men ikke imponerende...

500 ml bottle Appearance: Black opaque color, 1,5 finger sized head, not a very good retention, but the lacing is ok. Aroma: Roasted mals, iron, chocolate, coffee, licorice and earthy tones Taste: Follows the palate, But quite Sweet and a good bitterness to couner, specially in the finish which has a bit of alcohol here as well. However he finish is a bit short.. Medium ody, soft carbonation, silk texure A bit too sweet, but ver easy to drink imperial stout. Maybe a good Imperial Stou for starers as i’s so easy ?

Aroma of roasted malts, caramel, dried fruit, chocolate, oak, light vanilla, some liquorice. Flavour is roasty and sweet, liquorice, with a little bitterness in the aftertaste. Alcohol is hidden well. Smooth and well-balanced.
