Bottle. Pours a pretty darn black brew, with an inch of creamy, light-brown head. The head sinks slowly, leaving lots of lacing. In the nose I get mainly dark malts and fresh grains, and some dark fruits. Full mouthfeel, soft carbonation. In the flavor I get dark malt, coffee, licorice. The promised aniseed and fennel seeds are there, but not very prominent. Or perhaps I should say they’re well-integrated. They don’t leap out at you, but they’re definitely there. Quite bitter, almost on the edge of astringent. Earthy finish.

As I continue drinking it, I sense that there’s something strange about this beer, I think it’s the spices, and that 0,5 liters was too much for me alone.

09.12.2011. 0,5l Botle. Vinmonopolet Haugesund. Dark brown color with off-white head. Aroma of dark malts. Good flavours of dark malts with some sweetness and good bitterness. Medium body with good alcohol strength and good lasting bitter aftertaste. Strong and solid beer.

Flaske 0,5l fra Vinmonopolet, Tromsø. Kullsort. OK luftig, litt farget skum som henger seg på glasset. Sterk søt karamellaroma. Smaken det samme, men også innslag av lakris. Monoton.

Bottled. Very dark, milk chocolate head. Spicy aroma, but the aniseed is a bit overpowering considering the rather smooth stout base. Coffee, chocolate.

50cl bottle at Håndverkerstuene. Best before 2013-06-06. It poured a pitch black colour with a minimal head. Aroma is roasted malts, peat, some caramel as well as some floral notes(?). Flavour is bitter at first, but in a good way. Soon after the sweet parts comes around. Notes of chocolate, mild coffee as well as some spice. Medium long aftertaste.

0.5l bottle. This one pours a dark dark brown body with a nice quite big and heavy lacing tan head. The aroma is light spicy with lots of chocolate milk, some roasted malts, hops and licorice. Quite nice. Average carbonated with a medium-bodied and oily mouthfeel. Good and hoppy flavors nicely blended with chocolate, roasted malts and some nice hints of both licorice and wood. Ends quite bitter and hoppy before its leaving the mouth quite dry with a nice roasted aftertaste. Good stuff!

Mezcalmannen (395) - Oslo, NORWAY - NOV 8, 2011
Texture is very creamy in this brew, taste and aroma is chocolatey, but it isn’t all that sweet, due to a generous amount of hops. Finish is actually quite bitter, at least when the beer has warmed up. Dark brown colour, head is medium sized, mostly diminishing, and of brown colour. (Bottle)

Bottle shared with friends at Amundsen
Pours quite dark, turns black in glass with thin espresso laces. Smells funky, there is fennel and anis with the dark malt aromas. Taste is malty with a distinct chocolate tone. This beer is really unbalanced and i can’t work it out. The bitter finish is absolutely the best part of this beer
