Doppelganger (1353), Dry County, Arkansas, USA Oct 18, 2006 Gravity, Oxford CAMRA Festival. Pours a dark, almost opaque carmel. Small light tan head. Toasty biscuit aroma--much bigger aroma than the low abv would forecast. A nice touch of butter, soft and beguiling all around. Biscuit flavor, lots of dark carmel flavor, almost to the point where it could be described as roastiness. More toasty biscuit in the finish. My expectations for this were pretty low. If it weren’t for the somewhat thinning selection on the last day of the festival I probably would have passed this up, which made the pleasure of discovering this ale all the greater. If I could get this in one of my local pubs, I would be very pleased to have this as my usual pint. Jam-packed with flavor. It’s stunning really, when you think that the ubiquitous pale lagers of the world are generally stronger than this, but have less flavor in a pint than a spoonful of this. Boring pale lager brewers--this is the sort of beer that should make you ashamed of yourself. Rune (2744), Tromsø, Norway Oct 14, 2006 Half pint on gravity at The Dove Street Inn (A stunning bastion devote to real ale in Ipswich). Black appearance with a brownish tint to it. Crispated small head. Roasted malty to the nose. Has also got a malty profile with hints of black coffee and sweet chocolate. Smooth and medium bodied. A role model for a Mild ale (21.09.2006). Finn (1422), Tromsø, Norway Oct 11, 2006 Cask at The Dove Street Inn Ipswich 21 Sep 06. Deep red/black coloured. A small white creamy head. Cautious flavour of roasted malt. Pleasant roasted finish. MesandSim (5790), London, Greater London, England Oct 6, 2006 A Mes rate:
Cask at the Wenlock Arms. Roasted malty mild. Hints of coffee and chocolate. Bitter finish. Not bad. Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Sep 12, 2006 Cask at Wenlock Arms. Brown-black body with a small off-white head. Roasted malts with green apples dipped in a black liquorice mixture. Unusual and a bit weak (to be expected at 3.7%). I guess like the man it was named after it is weird and a bit gay. Nekronos (2243), Xalapa, Mexico Sep 6, 2006 This was excellent, but not purple, was more than good, and maybe more than a mild, I mean, It was too alcoholic, many people went to look for it and was really enjoyable and never tiring. Good foam. scania (184), Malmö, Sweden Aug 25, 2006 Cask at GBBF 2006. Black/ruby. Chocolate in aroma and flavor. Dry finish. Really nice. anders37 (4516), Malmö, Sweden Aug 21, 2006 Cask @ GBBF 2006. Reddish/black colour with no head. Roasted malty chocolate aroma, hints of coffee. Sweet malty roasted flavor, with hints of coffee and chocolate. Long malty chocolate finish with some bitter aftertaste.
