4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
The head is good, the body black. It smells delicious: vanilla, darkmalty, a bit roasty, aromatic, flowery, great. The taste is maltaromtic, bit hoppy, bit coffee-bitter, flowery, vanilla, coffee, aromatic, bit choolate. Very good and easy to drink. 13/12/13/12/-/12

A delicious porter that delivers more than expected (and more that many stouts promise). Chocolate, coffee, and vanilla in abundance - all together in a nice tasty beer. Whatís not to like?

Bottle. Pretty much black, small but thick brown head with decent retention and solid lacing. Aroma of vanilla, chocolate covered biscuits dipped in espresso, graham crackers, holy cow! Taste is rich vanilla, with coffee and graham crackers in the finish.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Aroma at first nothing but various chocolates: dark, milk, powdered. Later the vanilla comes through. Very thin body, at first I didnít think Iíd like it, but I must say the whole bottle slid down my throat at breakneck speed. And 8% ABV, you say? Itís a bit of a cliche, but, you honestly would never know. I was hoping for something a bit more, er, ítexturedí, and full-figured, but this beer learned me good that itís not necessarily necessary.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Nice big vanilla nose, but lacks a certain subtleness to it. Almost too much vanilla that it overpowers the beer.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Again from a bottle, but at just below room temperature. Appears dark with tawny port notes and a covering of latte colour head on top. I took a good snort and was rewarded with plenty of burnt caramel, chocolate, licorice and then amid the tumult Jim heard from far ancestral voices prophesying vanilla. I had a learned off-sider tell me today that they tried it but didnít get the vanilla. I would suggest that this is because the usual appreciation is from essence or in ice-cream, candy or other artificial flavour. For me there is nothing like the smell of a vanilla pod in your hands, or sat in a bowl of sugar or left to macerate in a bottle of vodka. I get it here and it is evident, mellow and balances nicely with the coffee. Coffee becomes more apparent the longer it sits until it dominates, but this is a domination worth enduring.
For flavour it is silky and the vanilla is top of the pops. It isnít a shrinking violet of a beer but gives of strong flavours of chocolate, vanilla and then lastly chocolate. It is like a big chunk of dark chocolate dropped into a small amount of coffee and left to melt. It is primal, delicious and good. It is indulgent, delicious and tasty without being thick and overpowering. It left a powdery vanilla and velvet on the tongue best cleansed by something fizzy after... old champagne? Youíd have to be dulled to the point of insensitivity to miss not only the vanilla in this beer but also the charm.

2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 10/20
500ml bottle, served too cold. Pours dark brown with a small coffee head. Vanilla aromas, roasty notes and not much else. Mouthfeel is flat and very watery. Sweet, short finish. More complex tastes became apparent as it warmed up. A bit one dimensional and lacks body expected with the style. There are better beers in this series.
