Poured into a snifter. 4.5 A: Ruddy medium amber color. Two fingers of creamy beige head. Retention is very good for the ABV and lots of lacing is left. 4.5 S: Quite a hop bomb. Citrus and floral hops dominate. Mango, papaya, pineapple, and orange are the big players. Pine and grapefruit underneath. Caramel maltiness with a strong hit of bready yeastiness. 4.0 T: Surprisingly the malt is a big part of the taste. Lots of caramel, lots of peach and candied apple fruitiness. Again, lots of tropical fruits. Mango and papaya are strongest followed by pineapple and orange followed by pine and grapefruit. Mild to moderate yeastiness. The only thing that prevents me from enjoying this more is the bitterness. Bitterness is quite aggressive and lingers well into the aftertaste. The supposed 80 IBUs tastes more like double that. On a lighter note, the alcohol is well hidden. 3.5 M: Heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. There’s a bit too much chewiness from the yeast for me. It reduces the creaminess. 3.5 D: I’m going to have a hell of a time finishing this bottle with all this bitterness. Still, it’s a tasty beer and I wish I stumbled upon more than one bottle. Great nose and a solid taste. There’s not a whole lot of wheat flavor in this, but that’s to be expected considering the massive hoppiness. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 02-19-2012 04:51:04

10.4%ABV. Barleywine. Poured out brown. 26ºSRM. Nose has sweet citrus aromas. Orange. Mouthfeel is syrupy. There is a hint of phenol coupled with a stone-dusty like palate that I have come to associate with Belgian ales. Palate is sweet fruit and almost like fresh prune juice or plum nectar. There is pronounced alcoholic palate. Other flavors are dates, honey, honey plums with some nice deep caramel, treacle-like flavors. Hops are earthy, woody, bitter noble. Finish is medium with a dry woody bitter.

On tap. Dark color, clear liquid. Aroma of grain malts, alcohol. Although heavy sweet, there is still some bitterness, but I don’t think it is 80 IBU. Not for me...
