The fifth beer made with our brew buddies, Three Floyds. A big and ballsy, tasty Barley wine following the same path as the previous “Goops” made available. This time with corn taking over the throne.

Pours a glowing orange color, with a decent, froth, bubbly head. Tropical aromas of grapefruit, orange and peach, with just the tiniest hint of lemon and grass. Has a well developed toffee maltiness, adding a lovely sweetness to the beer, with a sunny, honeyed peak. Ripe orange goes all the way in this, perfectly put into the spotlight by sweeter, buttery malts with toffee and biscuit, without becoming too present at any point. Hops act as a source of fruity refreshment, also providing a slick, enjoyable bitterness, which soon gets swallowed by the strong malt backbone. Hops still shine through in a slightly stinging way, reminding me of fresh kiwis. The maltbase becomes a lot sweeter during the finish, to be able to withstand the uprising hop bitterness. Ends very well balanced, smooth, with both flavors still being detectable in a harmonious way. It has a grainy, somehow corny touch to it, but it only inherits the smallest space on the palate, while adding an interesting note to the malts.

Bottle @ RBGB III. Pours orange to yellow, white head. Aroma has grapefruits, lemon, other tropical fruits. More of it in the tast, combined with a sweet boozy bitterness that goes into alcohol. Great beer, but more DIPA than Barley Wine.

Pours hazy orange with a medium white head and good lacing. Great balance in this barley wine. Orange and carmel malt blend well and leave a sweet smooth finish. Perfectly balanced and very deep flavors. Glad I got to try this one. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Hazy golden yellow color, fluffy white head. Aroma of grapefruit, pineapple. Taste is orange peel. Much fruitier than your average barleywine. Nice stuff.

Hazey honey brown with a thick creamy cap floating on top, looks like a beer. Aroma is lacking, earthy, leather, sweetness, some hidden spice. The aroma is pleasant but where is it? This is dam drinkable, there is not a single trace of the high alcohol..... HOW!?!?! This beer is corny!!! (that was a joke) Really malty with a medium bitter finish, there be a hidden harshness. Leather, sugar, earth, needs more of stuff that has flavour.

Look: Pours with average/small off-white head (yellow), mixed with medium and big bubbles. Has fast retention, mostly diminishes, very thin layer stays on the top, leaves low amount of random lacing. Dark cloudy orange, can’t see through.

Smell: Pine, resin, grapefruit hop character combined with strong caramel, heavy bitter (chestnut) honey, some dates and biscuit. The hop part covers stuffier malt backbone, makes the fatness fresher.

Taste: Sweet light orange (and some other topical fruits) start. Continues to propolis, honey and biscuit light to medium sweetness. The middle is uncharacteristic for the style - surprisingly light, but does good for this beer. Pine notes also crawl in towards the end of the middle, and finish in smooth medium bitter spike, mostly pine dominated. It lingers deep in the throat, also some fruity notes come back.

Mouthfeel: Full body, medium heavy, but feels lighter, easy to drink.

Overall: Solid take, the most outstanding quality of this brew is it’s lightness and fresh hop character. Too many barleys are too fat, this one takes a good turn out of this (is this what the corn part does? not sure).

Bottle @ molen tasting. Fruity barley wine, with a vinous taste of raisin and malt. Warm and complex taste, like it?s aged a bit. Great.

Bottle @ 2nd Tuesday tasting. Aroma is big fruity hops, medium sweet malt and caramel. Flavour is burning alcohol, big malts, very bitter hops, fruity and herbal. Long lingering bitter fruity hops with a touch of malt sweetness. Very nice.

Bottled @ de Molen tasting, small sample. Slight hazy yellow to golden color, short white head. Aroma is slight malty, hint of caramel, slight grainy touch, soft alcohol, bit grassy and spicy hop. Quite sweet, soft bitter, slight alcoholic. Finish is soft burning alcohol. Soft carbonation, low to medium bodied. A bit one-dimensional and slightly alcoholic, but still quite enjoyable.
