2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 8/20
UPDATED: MAY 31, 2012 Averaging the two ratings
330ml bottle (Drink Shop, Tallinn) (7-:3+:7-:4:2=2.3)
7- Immediately after pouring a cooooold bottle from the fridge, this had a lovely citrussy hoppy aroma, with just a gentle sweet biscuity caramelly malt component too. Alas, by the time you can smell biscuity malts, you know the bodyís going to be overly caramelly and biscuity.
3+ Slightly hop hazy (I presume) orange. Healthy white frothy head with fair persistence.
7- Pretty good in the mouth, the biscuity malts are quite moderate, in fact they are just sweet enough to balance out the hops nicely. The hops are citrussy, but relatively moderate. Fairly simple taste, but thereís nothing wrong with that.
4 Crisp palate, carbonation and the coldness give you quite a slap round the chops before the hops have even started to kick in. (Note - thatís generally not a positive thing, but it was fitting for this beer, so in this case shouldnít be taken as a criticism.) The post-swallowing vapours are very nice, the biscuity malts still not giving up, and refusing to let the hops rule every aspect of the beer. Then again, thatís not hard, the hops arenít that extreme, thereís a nice resiny and grapefruity dryness, and that zing hangs around for quite a nice while. Best of all, it isnít oppressively drying, and doesnít leave you thirstier than when you started. Nearly as good as the original Alpoís IPA for getting the resininess just right.
2 Technically, not a bad beer. In fact, on any level, this is not a bad beer - I enjoyed this quite a lot. Thatís saying a lot, as I expected to hate it. I conclude that either I drank something different from other raters, in which case Mikkeller should be slapped hard for abysmal consistency, or in fact itís nowhere near 1000 IBU, in which case Mikkeller should be slapped hard for the "1000 IBU" bullshit. (Nope, saying "theoretical" is no get-out-clause - the whole thingís marketting bullshit, and youíre wankers for wanting to using it.) I donít want to dilute the only "1" overall that I currently have, so I wonít give it that. However, whilst I ponder whatís a fair total score for the beer, Iíll leave this at a "2", as I think the slapping needs to be pretty severe. In fact, if this had been a disgusting undrinkable alkaloid mess, I would have given it a higher overall score (but lower everywhere else, obviously).
Rerate: 330ml bottle (Drink Shop, Tallinn) - shared with Mirjukka and Janne as the first beer of the day after the Wappu eve before - cheers! (7:3:7:4:13)
Lovely citrussy aromatics, orangy and lemony at the top, and grtapefruity once those higher peaks subside. Lovely bitter bite, long resiny finish. Surprisingly bitter finish. A good beer to wake up to. So zesty. The IBUís still marketting bullshit of course, but itís a pretty tasty beer, and my ire is subsiding.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
bottle. Light amber with one finger head. I was expecting crazy bitter, and it is bitter, but not ridiculously so. The hops arenít particularly flavorful, probably due to the bitterness drowning things out a bit.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
0,33 l bottle as a gift.
Hazy amber ale witha nice creamy off white head. Aroma of cheese, some malt, elderberries, green apples. Really freaky. Medium body, light maltiness backbone with an aggressive hopiness. The cheese arrives again with a fruity background, some nuts in the flavor. Interesting - and fine, the hops numble my palate.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Bierkompass!
Pours hazy orange with flat soapy head. Smells strong hoppy, lots of pine woods and citrus fruits. Starts with massive hops, pine woods, sourish citrus notes and some tropical fruits. Goes into a very bitterish grassy hop finish with lots of pine woods, tropical fruits and some slight caramel malts. What a massive aroma bomb, wow!!!!!

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Clear orange beer with thick foamy head on top and lots of lacing. Aroma has tropical fruits, citrus, grapefruit, pines and grassy hops. Taste starts with grassy hops, then turns into this monstrously bitter pine flavor which is rather unpleasant and there isnít much else. For a curiosity beer this is still a below average beer, medium body and crispy mouth feel.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Wow this thing is bitter. CLear dull copper pour with decent offwhite sudsy head. Big old foresty pine nose gives way to an extremely grassy, floral, earthy, massive bitterness. Overly bitter to be very enjoyable. more of just a novelty.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
[Bottle (11.2oz)] Pours a hazy orange-copper with some sediment and an average size rocky off-white head. Some lacing on the glass. Nice hoppy aroma, lots of citrus, grass and pine, and not much else really -- and I donít mind. Flavour: Yup, thatís bitter alright -- itís hops, hops and hops and a big long, long bitter finish. Such a high IBU for such a low ABV. Medium bodied. An interesting beer for sure, I enjoyed it.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draft in a sampler at Ei8ht Ball. Pours a cloudy gold with a small white head. The aroma has floral, citrusy, sweaty, almost dank hops, sweet and pale and bready malts. The flavor starts floral and citrusy and eventually gives way to straight bitterness. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a harshly bitter mouthfeel. Just no malt balance, which is what redeems the pretty nice regular 1000 IBU.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Tap sample. Poured clear golden color with an average frothy white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate hop and malt aroma. Medium bitter flavor with a heavy acidic finish of moderate duration. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Worth having once brew.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Taster on tap at Ei8ht Ball. Mostly clear orange yellow color. Good thin white head, good ropes of lace. Smooth, crisp lighter carbonation. Lightly sticky texture. Medium body. Good citrusy, lightly grassy bitter hoppy taste, with a good long resiny hoppy aftertaste that lasts quite a bit. Impressive, massive bitter taste, minimal sweet. Extreme bitter, but not painful, I like it. Light body makes it drinkable. Impressive stuff.
