Man not often has a beer left me speechless. This is one of those times another time was mikkeller black. Meh nostalgic beer. Overly bitter & astringent.

On tap at Max’s in Baltimore. Hazy auburn pour. Nose..like the rest of the beer...is all about hops. Huge pine aroma. Just like a glass of spruce sap. Huge pine and grapefruit hop flavors - Simcoe hops? Finish is super bitter - my mouth was numb! WTF?!? Never thought I would say this, but this beer is too bitter. No real balance at all...it would have to have an enourmous terminal gravity to get enough malt in there to balance these hops! Full mouthfeel. Some alcohol presence as it warms. This was an exciting beer with tons of hype - I’m glad I tried it, but not what I would consider a very drinkable beer.

Bottle 375ml. Pours redish, brown on a short tan/white head. Aroma of hops. Taste is intence, aftertaste a little bitter. Taste also bitter, turning a little "old" in the end. Generally better then the barrel aged one in my opinion.

Only way I was tasting this was if the bottle shop manager opened it. He did. Pours a clean copper amber with one finger of amber head. Rich resinous nose with some diacetyl and pine. Way astringent and bitter , almost soapy. Bleh, coating tannic palate.

Another delight to see @ my home store. I am a sucker for all things these dudes brew. Dark murky orange pour with a creamy beige head, faded to a thin film and left lots o’ lace. Aroma was lots of citrus fruits and caramel malt. Like candied hops, lots of caramel. Flavors were brutally bitter, notes of caramel sweetness, floral fruity hops, some citrus. Long, long lingering bitter finish, damn. This is a palate wrecker by definition. Mouthfeel was full, carbonation big yet not fizzy. I loved this one.

UPDATED: NOV 15, 2011 This beer is art. OMFG, OMFG, OMFG. There is an INSANE amount of hops in this beer. Complex hops flavors too, bitter resin, pine... but then citrus, grapefruit, sour unripened berries. There is a good amount of sugary, malty, caramel sweetness to this beer as well, which tames the unbelievable hop content with artful grace. Even the mouthfeel is well calculated. It starts out crisp and lively, and then smooths off in to a silky texture that helps relieve the bitter shock you receive from the hops. Absolutely incredible... only the aroma needs work. Pliny is perfect in the aroma department, this is close.

Bottle 375ml @ fonefan
Pours dark amber with a off-white head. Aroma is very hoppy with notes of caramel. Taste is heavy sweet and medium bitter. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. This beer is surprisingly easy drinkable.

Tasted both on tap and bottle. Rating is from tap, the far better of the two imo.
Hazy amber color, with a thick light brown head. Very hoppy aroma with raisins, lotsa hops, grape, citrus, pine and lots more! Bitter, bitter taste but (thankfully) not as bitter as you could imagine. Some caramel too. Left me wanting more of the same :)
Bottle a week later was never in the same league

In short: A muddy/messy bottle of yeast and bitter green hops. Primitive tasty IPA
How: Bottle 375ml. Consumed about 6 months after the beer release
The look: Cloudy amber body with lots of particles. Medium beige head with medium retention
In long: Nose of green pine-needles, grapefruits and anything that screams high-alpha acids. Taste is caramel with a lot of biting leafy hops, strong minty sensation, a lot of yeast. Bitterness is strong but not very pleasant with some kind of plastic character in the finish. Carbonation is too soft and the mouthfeel was doughy. As a whole this beer is kind of a mess. Yes it is very bitter (although I’ve had more bitter IPAs) but the bitterness is overshadowed by the muddy character of the beer. Being a hop-head I was all excited to try a 1000 IBU beer. 1000 IBU!!! I was disappointed. When something seems too good to be true it is usually a trap. If I meet a chick who is into craft beer, heavy metal music and anal sex I will check her adam apple.

Always a thrill to open a bottle of Mikkeller. This one pours a deep brown with an oatmeal looking sticky head. Big lacing. It looks inviting. Hops reign supreme in the aroma and are all over the place. Hops are also huge in the flavor. As expected they are very bitter, but not overly so. They have a big grapefruit bite. There is also some sweeter tangerine. The hops are almost taste bud numbing. There is also some wonderful rich malt that provides sweetness and very nice flavor. But the story here is hops. This is a wild beer drinking experience.
