This beer is a hopheads dream. Bitter as all get out. Chewy hops. Lovin it. I have always skipped this beer because one bottle was ten bucks. I found it on tap at a beer tasting bar for one buck. Lucky me.

Draught @ The Olympic Tavern. I’ve been waiting a LONG time to try this one (thanks Zak!). Pours a cloudy amber with a thin head that leaves a beautiful lacing. Aromas of pine and grapefruit. Flavor is total hops with the perfect balance of malt sweetness....this is the ULTIMATE hop head nectar!!!It I’m really suprised at how well balanced this is-it just doesn’t get any better than this.

UPDATED: NOV 15, 2011 This beer is art. OMFG, OMFG, OMFG. There is an INSANE amount of hops in this beer. Complex hops flavors too, bitter resin, pine... but then citrus, grapefruit, sour unripened berries. There is a good amount of sugary, malty, caramel sweetness to this beer as well, which tames the unbelievable hop content with artful grace. Even the mouthfeel is well calculated. It starts out crisp and lively, and then smooths off in to a silky texture that helps relieve the bitter shock you receive from the hops. Absolutely incredible... only the aroma needs work. Pliny is perfect in the aroma department, this is close.

Forget the 1000 IBU moniker; this DIPA is all that and a can of hopjuice. Pop the cap and you are met with a roaring onslaught of deep resin, mint and high alpha goodness. Pours a tawny light brown with a thick frothy ran head replete with scads of sticky lacing smattered across my goblet. The best thing about 1000 is that it is not a one trick pony. This brew has an inpeccable rich chewy caramel malty backbone. While not balanced at all, the malty keeps the spicy tingling hop assault from running off the scale. Long earthy bitter finish and some chest warming finishes things up.

375ml bottle. Pours a hazy mid-amber, with lots of floating sediment - I’m guessing, given the beer, that he sediment is not the usual yeast, but is instead hops. Its large off-white head lasts well and leaves excellent lacing. The aroma is, oddly enough, extremely hoppy, to the exclusion of anything else. Grapefruit, pine resin and some weak floral notes are the main aromas. There is a brief moment of nothing much at the start, before an absolute avalanche of bitterness hits. White pepper and an almost chilli-like burn assault the tastebuds in a way that no other beer that I have tasted does. A touch of ginger plays a supporting role, much as it would in a fiery curry, and a hint of pine is introduced in the body. The merest touch of caramel malt appears towards the finish, before being overcome by grapefruit and pine in the aftertaste. After swallowing, the front of the tongue especially is left with a similar prickling, stinging sensation to that left by strong chilli on the lips. An insane brew, this stretches the limits of beer like nothing else I have encountered. Being both a lover of extreme beer and a certified (or certifiable?) hop-head, the sense of anticipation I had before this beer was immense. It didn’t disappoint. A gibbering, raving lunatic of a beer. Great stuff.

On tap at biero. Masterpiece, massive beer. Aromas of caramel, nuts, and dark fruit. Taste has perfectly balanced sweetness and bitterness, and very long length. Palate is syrupy, and full bodied. Brown, with a frothy head.

Figured this one would be too overwhelming but it isn’t. Stong resin hop aroma and notes of spruce. Very cloudy with short lived head. Taste is a hop lovers dream and hop citrus hop flavors touch every part of your tongue.

Bottle from Capone’s and Frank Smith’s. Pours turbid deep orangy mahigany w 2-finger fluffy white head. Nose is big caramel malt, hops, pineapple, tangerine, black pepper, mango. Tastes of huge caramel malt, extremely smooth and well integrated hops, earthy, tropical fruit of the mango/pinepple/tangerine trifecta, black pepper. Tis one is outstanding, and reminds me a little of a souped up, hopped up AlphAlphA. Rich, complex, well hidden alcohol, and a masterpiece.

Draught @ Phred’s in Hokkaido ! Huge aroma, makes its presence known with the beckoning smell of beervana. Thick and substantial it starts out hoppy and becomes richer and more balanced as the beer fills your mouth. Doesn’t ever feel like an extreme hop experiment, it is a wonderful balance of just right bitterness with wonderful sustaining malty sweetness. Long, long, finish which again turns bitter but in such a good way !! Awesome stuff.
