Pitch black with a surprisingly large, brown head. Aroma has much oak, booze, malt, dried fruits, butter, vanilla, sweet chocolate and no hops. Taste has a massive oak-body, very sweet, perfumed burnt sugar, vanilla, port, cognac on the palate, some more rough whisky in the back. Slightly boozy but very complex and interesting.

Big black body with a massive 1” brown crown! How do you get a cap at 17.5%??? Mikkeller knows that’s how!!! CRAP!!!! Just had an 1 hour delay from my pour to first taste and smell, new baby just had a diaper explode everywhere and I mean everywhere, had to give the kid a bath clean the floor, wash some walls, I’m sure my next weekend project will be to clean the inside of some light fixtures. I think the kid just spewed his own body weight from his bum. Back to the beer that is now room temperature. Smell is epic!! So intense, this is scary stuff. Very sweet aroma, bubble gum, smoke, charred coffee beans, and of course the cognac it isn’t hidden or even subtle it’s in your face booze. I’m getting faint noted of ginger but mot ginger. So very sweet tasting I think drinking straight grenadine would be less sweet then this. Flavour is first and foremost cognac with a bitter ash finish. Raspberry……. possibly from the booze? More bubble gum sweetness. Massive amounts of burnt coffee/ash but even this is getting a beat down from the cognac sweetness. I think this is too sweet for me but I can’t decide right now. I really wish this was chewier. Daaaaaaaaa………not sure how to score this I could give it a 2.6 -4.4 depending on what sip it is. Help me Jeebus!!! This was truly an epic beer to drink and buy it if you see it but don’t expect to love it.

Bottle @ ACBF ’11. Aroma is huge, peat, alcohol, molasses, tobacco, roasted malt, and loads more. Flavour is deep peaty and alcholic liquorice, very intense. A tad too sweet and alcoholic to be top notch, but still very good.

Bottle #3 at Bills big vertical tasting. Pours a nice deep, dark with a tan head that faded quickly. Crazy nose of coffee, roasted malt, licorice, and cognac. Beautiful tastes of cherries and dark fruits. Some hints of vanilla and a burnt sugar finish. Nicely carbed with a beautiful balance between the brandy / cognac sweetness and the chewy, slighly bitter chocolate flavors. Double wow. Ties for my fav of the night. Delish.

Bottle, bought ?
Pours utterly black with a small, creamy, light-brown film head. Aroma has roasted malts, sweet cognac, caramel, dark chocolate and quite a bit of alcohol. Low carbonation, lovely oily palate. Flavour starts mildly burning (this gets far better as the beer warms up), lots of dark chocolate, roasted malts, cognac. Fairly vinious (obviously!), warming. Some plums and tar. Long, lingering, bitter and warming finish. A lot better than the un-oaked version, this softens out the many rough edges of the original. Lovely.

Like all of the Black range this pours out dark as pitch with a particularly solid and creamy head, which lasts throughout and leaves an intricate lacing on the glass. There’s a wonderful heat of cognac to this, held above the traditional aromas of the base beer; but there’s a rich late harvest grape profile too - wonderful nose. In the mouth it’s intensely bitter-sweet, leaning towards the drier side of things. Alcohol, chocolate, soy and hops sit behind the cognac and the wood; then developments of honey and coffee come through, finishing with a flourish of bitterness. Perhaps my second favourite of the line, just behind the white waxed whiskey edition. Wonderful sipper, even better shared.
