4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
37.5 cL bottle from Kensington Wine Market in Calgary courtesy of JB, served in a tulip. Pours black with a minimal tan head. The head quickly fades to nothing and there is no lacing. The nose has huge aromas of molasses, sweet roasted malts, soy sauce and raisins. Hops are also prominent, providing a perfect balance with herbal and earthy notes. The flavour is intensely sweet with molasses and roasted malts. There are strong whisky notes, with peat and smoke. Hope are more prominent towards the finish, providing accents of herbs and earth. The finish is sweet and roasty with lots of alcohol. On the palate, it is full in body with a thick, creamy texture and almost no carbonation. Overall, this is an amazing imperial stout. The Islay casks have imparted a complementary peaty whisky character. It is intensely sweet but it never cloys. Infinitely complex with an enormous 17.5% ABV, this straddles the line between beer and spirit. I would love to try the others in the series. 2011-02-12

Pour black with thin super oily brown head. Aroma of vermouth, sweet soy sauce, peat, smoke, wood , coffee and some earth tones. Taste sweet maple bacon, wood, peat, sweet chocolate, coffee, vanilla and roastiness. MF medium very oily body, very slight prickly carb. Overall wayyyy to sweet for my taste but I can appreciate the complexity and taste profile this beer brings.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle, huge thanks to Savvy1982. Iím drinking this in between the High Lifeís Iíve had on this super bowl sunday. Pours black with a medium sized brown head that fades eventually. Aroma of dark fruit, medicinal islay notes, tobacco, salt, wood, smokey malts and barrel. Taste is very sweet, lots of chocolate and vanilla flavor with some woody bitterness. Body is thick and chewy. Very meaty, smokey, sweet. Damn, what a beer. Alcohol, while being quite noticeable, is not the dominate factor, the malt is.
