4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours heavy black with a chocolate head. Aroma is very strong: coffee, ash, some solvent pear-drop alcohol. Flavour is truly immense; very sweety initially, but soon this is balanced (in a way) by aggressive alcohol burn, some apples/bbq sauce, and an ashy finish. Very big, in every way. A real experience.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Had this many times (tap and bottle), but following review is from the best I’ve had. Bottle 37.5 cl, 2007 vintage big ups to Werner. Pours as black as your ex wife’s heart, with a quickly fading dark coffee colored head. Aroma is pungent alcohol, with underlying coffee, fruity hops and candy sugar. Also some madeira, sherry. Taste is fairly muddled behind the alcohol. Everything pretty much happens on the finish here. First hit of alcohol burn and sweetness is washed away with intense bitterness from hops and roasted malts. Mouthfeel is thin and boozy. Not my favorite imperial stout, but this vintage blew every other version I’ve had clean out of the water. Well worth chasing an older bottle.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle, 2012 vintage.
Black (of course!) with a surprisingly big light brown head.
Vanilla, sweetness, dark chocolate, port/sherry notes.
Sweet at first, vanilla, then chocolate, coffee, sweet liquorice, almost herbal bitterness, sweetness again and biting but not disturbing alcohol.
Smooth mouthfeel, soft low carbonation.
Huge bitter long lasting after taste.
Like a beefed up, bitter Black Hole. Nice.

3.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 16/20
Strong coffee smell, not really my thing. Looks great, nice and dark. Tastes of nice chocolate and very much coffee at first. However, the aftertaste is too bitter and too much coffee (unbalanced) for me.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle@rotterdam, hki. Black & flat. Very vinous, sherry-port- like nose with roasted barley, espresso beans underneat. Full, soft smooth body with an undisturbing (alc?) kick in the finish. There’s a million thing going on here. There’s sweetness, soy sauce, dark coffee in the burps, roasted malts. As a fan of port wine, this is truly amazing. It’s been too long (i.e., the last time I had it) since I’ve had a beer as delicious and sippable. It pleases just about every type of tastebud I know of- the sweet, salty, umami-savory. I bet this would make a great replacement for soy sauce with sushi..

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle - 357ml. Pours an opaque black body with low carbonation and a thin brown foamy head. Complex, well balanced malty/hoppy aroma with chocolate, coffeeish, roasted cereals, and some Bourbon hints. Alcohol is not too overwhelming. Texture is soft and taste is strong, rich. It carries oaky, licorice, vineous, roasted coffee, and dark chocolate notes. Ends with a very long, strong bittersweet finish. Outstanding!

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Black as night, and thick/oily to boot. So heavy but not overpowering. Take your time with this one. Big malt backbone and more subtle dark fruit flavor. Quite enjoyable.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours a pitch black syrupy fluid with a cream colored head that sticks to the glass and does not disappear.
Strong chocolate, alcohol and cherry aroma from the glass only. After that dark red fruit, sweet chocolate, caramel, alcohol, coffee, hint of citrus, roasted malts.
First sip... WOW! Caramel chocolate sweets, after that a coffee with a little citrus bitter and finishes with warming alcohol. In the after taste tinteling bitter, burning alcohol and some sweets. Next sips, again the sweets and bitters with less alcohol.
The mouth-feel is a great creamy, bit oily texture with a bit dry finish.
What a beautiful imperial stout. At 17.5% you expect alcohol, but it is not at al disturbing. The sweet and the bitter are perfectly balanced and the alcohol warms you up. Truly a complex awesome beer.
