Aroma: very powerful, black malt, big roasted backbone. Alcohol, estery (elderberry), fiery, orange, slightly fudgy, vaguely of smoke & ancient leather, coffee, rowanberry.
Flavour: big, sweet, sourish, extreme malt bitterness, burnt sweet liquorice. Great balance of obscene & extreme falvours. Absolutely adorable. Alcoholic burn & mandarin sweetness. Some oak tones? Very bitter aftertaste with hints of beautiful hops, red onion & golden grapefruit.
Appearance: ridiculously dark - black coffee-/red-tinted with superfine dark tan head leaving a greyish film. Awesome.
Palate: very smooth, fluffy, vinous, oily, surprisingly ’fruit-juicy’... could almost swear they’ve put some juice in it.

Bottle. Pours pitch black with a beautiful mocha head, leaving a fantastic lacing while it disappears (and while one drinks). Aroma: chocolate, caramel, one can feel the alcoholic aroma. Taste: Wow! A burst of chocolate, dark malts, raisins, alcohol (pleasant), sweetness (probably from the sugar they’ve used). It is really thick - you almost need a fork. Palate: warming (although the 16% ABV is very well hidden!), it leaves a bitter aftertaste on the tongue, which stays for a long time. The latter feature is actually something that disturbes me here. Not sure it is a characteristic of my bottle of the beer as a whole. But even with this "disadvantage" - one of the best beers I have ever had.

Bottle: Welp, it’s black. Looks oily, too. Brilliant sheen across the top that reflects lots of light. No "head", just some deep tan bubbles that layer themselves across the top. Aroma is full of deep roastiness, heavy booze, bitter dark chocolate, prunes, soy sauce, & a strong residual sweetness resembling charred brown sugar.. if that makes sense? Mild anise. Taste is... Wow. Almost too much. Heavy. As. Fuck. So much booze, so much sweetness. Notes of alcohol, Kikkoman’s finest, super-sweet chocolate, cloying brown sugar, light smoke & charred, roasty malt, & the faintest touch of milkiness on the back of the tongue. Thick, semi-viscous body that coats your palate like a primer. Such a big beer. It’s not bad, per se, but it’s just so damn unnecessary. It’s lacks the longevity of other "extreme" beers like Utopias, so there’s never really a time to drink this. I’ve had other 17%+ beers that were much smoother & easier to drink. This is a bomb.

Draught. Thick brown head with very good lacing. Aroma is complex and changes as the beer warms up. Starts with fruit and alcohol, then an extremely strong coffee aroma feels the mouth, there is also a bit of ash. What is impressive is that the beer is not cloying and does not feel sweet and alcohol is not disturbing. The coffee taste is too strong for me.

Alengrin (1297) - BELGIUM - AUG 19, 2014
Spectacularly strong imperial stout with Chinese name (transcribed as ’hēi’) apparently just meaning ’black’. Light beige foam, quickly decreasing under influence of the heavy alcohol, colour black with wine-red hue, only visible under bright light. Extremely overpowering and intoxicating aroma of coffee liqueur, port wine, sherry, Belgian chocolates, camphor, candied dates and figues, goosberries, Kirsch... Equally extreme palate, very intense, very thick and oily, creamy, candied fruits, candi syrup, very heavy and viscous mouthfeel, profoundly malty with roasted bitterness like coffee beans, thick chocolate and unsurprisingly, a lot of brandy- and gin-like, warming, astringent but in this case not even disturbing alcohol, supported as it is by the utterly rich maltiness. Wow, what a profound and amazing brew... Not cheap, but worth every penny.

adster (203) - HUNGARY - AUG 17, 2014

Tap, Taphouse. Black, tiny, offwhite head. Coffee and licorice aroma. Huge mouthfeel, more coffee and licorice, warming booze, intense bitterness. Quite intense.

On tap. OMG! Black pour with dark beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, caramel, sweet fruits, vanilla and leather. Taste was incredibly complex, more and more flavours coming through as this warmed closer to room temperature. Without a doubt the most complex beer I have ever had . I tasted everything through the temperature scale, roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, espresso, leather, caramel, vanilla, licorice, toffee, molasses, cherries, dark red ripe fruits, lychee, raisin, figs, absolutely decadent. Full bodied, slightly lower carbonation, creamy silky smooth on the palate, perfectly balanced. Long finish that lasts for minutes, starting sweet chocolate fudge turning into a bitter hoppiness. just begging you to take another sip. As near perfect beer as I have tasted, brilliant!!

Black.Small, but persisten pale brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, strong coffee and bitter dark chocolate. Superb tast exploding in the mouth and similarly fantastically long aftertaste, with a high degree of roasted malts and bitterness well in balance.

Very black appearance, head is dark brown, coffee and melanoides in aroma, little bit of baked crust. The taste is heavy with great , extremely strong bitterness. Palate is very rich with variations of smoked and dark malty notes. The experience is awesome but abscence of american hops aroma is a bit of a let down. Alcohol is greatly hidden.
