ksurkin (354), Norfolk, Virginia, USA Apr 2, 2009 Updated: Apr 3, 2009500ml bottle from CBX. pours a slightly hazy, golden copper, with a thick, creamy, eggshell head. aroma is great with huge aromas of lemon zest, orange, earthy pine, coriander, and a sweet, nutty maltiness. flavor is truly wonderful. big piney hops, citrus peel, hints of tropical melon, spice, dried apples, pine nuts, and toasted caramel malt. finish has an initial sweet berry character that becomes nicely bitter with dry citrus notes. mouthfeel is very crisp and clean with great carbonation and great balance. overall an oustanding APA from none other than...denmark. well done mikkeller. Stew41 (1040), Caulfield, Australia Apr 2, 2009 Another well made and balanced beer from the house but a bit hopped-out to my tastes. The Muggus reads the colour very well so not much more to add. Nose is very lifted and fresh, packed with hops as well as a slightly unusualy polished wood character. Some sweet citrus as well. Lots of hops and bitterness in the mouth. Lacks no power but quite balanced and smooth. Dark toffee and hard hops to finish. Muggus69 (490), Sydney, Australia Mar 31, 2009 500ml bottle. BB N/A?
Served chilled in a mug.
Pours yet another picture perfect glassful; persistant creamy offwhite foam atop a copperish gold body, with only the slightest haze.
Plenty of juicy hops straightup, pine and citrus are obvious and good proportions, I get ripe stonefruits, spice, grass and some dried apricot, and sultana leading onto a backdrop of burnt toffee and subtle nuttiness. Seems to change with each whiff.
Mouth-coating body, nice creamy carbonation, resinous hops seem to cling to my tongue, yet not dryness and astrigency is well controlled.
Lovely hops on the body, plenty of citrus rind, woody pine, stonefruit, melon, leading onto dried fruit and spice. Malt body is in good proportions, biscuit and toffee. Finishes with a firm bitterness and lingering tart berry-like fruitiness that just makes me want more.
A tremendously well-made, perfectly balanced and flavoursome APA. I’d have another (and thensome) if I came across it again!
Ceebs25 (217), Naperville, Illinois, USA Mar 28, 2009 1 pint .9 fl oz bottle. This beer is fairly heavy on both sweet and bitter on the aroma than one would expect from this style, with a wallup of earth, pine, and citrus hops, dark melon fruit, apricot, and some caramel. Also, quite pretty on the pour with a big creamy, milk white, large bubble head that mostly dissipates, but some nice sticky lacing evident, very cloudy and thick appearing body for an apa, and persimmon orange-red in color. Without tasting this one, I’d be hard pressed to not think i was about to drink an imperial ipa or a heavy strong ale... but an american pale ale, no way. The flavor and palate profile do come alittle bit closer to the standard, but at the same time they don’t. Do not be fooled, this is definitely a full-flavored, unique piece of brewmaking. A bunch of citrus hits right away, orange zest and grapefruit especially, along with melon, fairly spicy and herbal through the middle, with more earthy bitter notes coming through at this point as well, then caramel cookie malts build in to provide some more balance just when i feel like its about to tilt too much to the other side, and then a finish is similarly bitter to notes experienced before, but with a hint of sourness and tart berries that make for quite an interesting and enjoyable finish that lasts and keeps me thinking about just how can a pale ale have so much going on and such variety and depth in every aspect of the beer tasting process. Just a great experience with a beer of this style, and for that matter, this i just truly a great beer, if not the best apa out there, alpha king included. I’m very impressed. gary07734 (391), Tyne & Wear, England Mar 28, 2009 Pours darkish copper colour with a huge fluffy head. Taste is bucketloads of citrus & coriander hops with banana, herbal bitterness and a syrupy sweetness, also has an interesting malty background that reminds me of english ales. Enjoyable. gam (1059), brisbane, Australia Mar 22, 2009 Mild carbonation good frothy head apricot colouraroma fruity malt good hop noted flavour caramel smoothness citrus bitter is smooth nutty taste slight oily note does no harm this is a lovely relaxing strong tasting smooth ale bitter is mild the finish malty bitter great KyotoLefty (1371), Kyoto, Japan Mar 8, 2009 Nice low, lacy foam head. Dry, fruity aroma, clean clear malt, citrus, flint, pine. Crips, dry, spicy flavor. Great balance and peppery hops. Dry and refined, with lightish malts. Very clean and refreshing. Complex hops— bitter with a long, austere, finish.
TimE (1300), Tokyo, Japan Mar 4, 2009 Toffee, cherries, milk chocolate. Full bodied, rich, well balanced. Syrupy bitter finish. Excellent
