SAY "OH WHAT" IN DANISH. NOT ORVAL – BUT ÅRH HVAD. Color is Cloudy amber and has a white head. The taste is peppery, malty with a hoppy finish.

Bottle bought at Delhaize. Orange with a white head. Peppery, brett, orval-like smell. Taste is much more pepper than Orval, and drier too. Nice, but simply give me an Orval. Bit too bitter.

Köpt på M Bar Go. Klar gyllengul färg med generös vit skumkrona. Frisk doft av citrus och äppelkart. Smak ungefär detsamma.

Well done ye Trappist monks of Denmark! Nearly prefect emulation and in some ways even improvement on yer Belgian brethren. And three cheers to Delhaize for offering this treat. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery, some people say... This beer does not even try to hide the fact that it is an attempt at imitating the classic Orval. Difficult to judge without prejudice... Thickly lacing, frothy, fairly dense, yellowish white head, colour clear light amber with vivid sparkling, murky orangey brown with deposit, just like "the real thing" but perhaps a bit more messy than I am used to from actual Orval. Aroma indeed evokes Orval in a pretty accurate way; even difficult to grasp in words, let’s say I get hints of roasted peanuts, wet leather, sour yoghurt, gooseberries, fresh green apple, hay, unripe mango, cava, freshly ploughed earth in spring, subtle hints of dried tomato, lemon zest, black pepper, persimmon, fresh menure (but in a ’good’ Brett way, if you get my drift) and gin. Kicks off with a restrained estery fruitiness, mango, pear and sour berries, with a peppery and leafy hop bitterness already showing up at the first sip; strong, somewhat minerally carbo, crisp, over a nutty, toasted, lightly caramelly malt backbone, smooth body but a bit harsh due to the high carbo (which is the case in a young Orval as well), ’tangy’ Belgian yeast spiciness dancing around with a clear Brett presence; the peppery, leafy, earthy, ’deep’ hop bitterness which was already quite showy in the onset develops further and leaves your palate dried and bitter for a long time, even bitter root- or tonic water-like in the end. Looks like Orval and very nearly smells like one; I had several beers trying to rival this world classic so far, but it goes without saying it has not, to this point, been surpassed (not trying to be snobbish or chauvinistic here!), yet this one comes as close as it gets, in my humble opinion. I am convinced this one would age just as well too, with the ’animalistic’ Brett complexity doing its work in slowly replacing the hop bitters, but this one seems just a little more harsh than the real thing, being just a bit too generous with the hops and thereby disturbing the balance and refinement of this particular recipe a bit. Orval remains a class of its own, yet I do appreciate this bold attempt, just as much as I appreciated Mikkeller’s take on oude geuze last week - which, much in the same way, did not achieve the same amount of finesse and complexity the Belgian version had. Still, this beer did touch me (being an Orval afficionado): it almost reminded me of the bygone days when Orval itself was notably hoppier than today, even to the point where it was Belgium’s most hop bitter beer ever... But that was before IPA came along, of course. Nice work though, enjoyed tasting this. I’d love to taste this side by side with a real Orval - which is not all too difficult, considering this beer is now available at the Delhaize supermarkets, to my utter bewilderment. There is a certain arrogance about this, claiming the renowned craft brewers can pull magic and brew anything they want, but I’d rather consider this a hommage to one of the great, good ole Belgian classics. Great pastiche!

330 ml. bottle @ home. Purchased @ Delhaize. I always expected Mikkeller to become a global brand but it is still a real schock to being able to buy a Mikkeller beer in a supermarket in Belgium. Drank side-by-side with Orval. Orval bottled on 10/03/2015. I think that there might be only 7 days difference between both bottles. Årh Hvad?! is BBF 04/03/2025. Small touch hazy amber compared to Orval but not much. Head is way bigger, disappearing rather quickly, off-white, colour is touch more milky. Brett is way heavier in the Årh Hvad?!, very upfront in the smell, caramel malts, orange peel, fruity in the back, flowers & lots of candy sugar in a good way but brett dominates. Taste is bitter floral, mineral, some bitter plastic, floral, plastic orange peel, plenty of brett, grass, dried apricot, lots of spices,… Light touch too plastic. Body is much drier, bit thinned out, less chewy malts but might be the age since I am drinking a very fresh Orval. I do think that both beers should be almost the same age. There is a plastic bitterness in the back. It really has all of the elements of Orval, it isn’t as fine tunned, it lacks complexity a bit, it is too much brett forward, touch too little sweetness, malt etc. It is a very admirable attempt. The spoof of the Trappist logo on the bottle is a nice touch. I def. enjoyed, it would have probably shined a bit more if I tried this one on its own & not next to Orval. I am a huge fan of Orval. I would love to try the BA versions of this beer. I blended a bit of both beers but the total was less than the sum of parts in my opinion. Still this is surprisingly close but no cigar.

330ml bottle from Vinmonopolet Tromsdalen. Decent artwork on the glass from a rocky, pearl white head. Clear amber coloured body. Semi-tart smell of grass and dark spices. Fine blended taste of pears, caramel and citrus on a backbone of mild dark spices. Drying finish. Rounded texture. Successful interpretation of its Belgian brother (Tromsø 18.04.2015).

A bit sour like lambic but with a medicinal taste. Wine nose. Dried fruits, earth and malt. B@H
