4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
500ml bottle split with Mcberko. Pours murky black with a quickly reducing but lingering tan head. Aroma has notes of coffee, cocoa, peat and lush malt. Taste is lightly roasted malts with evident coffee notes. There’s a slight sweetness but more understated than other Mikkeller stouts. The lingering presence of wood and scotch is evident but underplayed. Slight hop bitterness in the finish. Medium body, slightly thin and oily. Lingers fairly well with some hop bite and a faint hint of licorice. Decent but not worth the $20 price point.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
20100515 Sampled at PilsnerPeter’s 2nd Annual Spring Gathering. Black and viscous appearance. Palate is unctuous, oily. Full of charred, woody flavors and aromas. The peat is overtaken by a Scottish blacksmith’s smoke. Becomes quickly cloying.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Taste at PilsnerPeter’s 2nd Annual Gathering
Shitty notes on this one, but memory strong enough. Lots of oak and barrel here, very thin and hot. The strength of the beer’s profile doesn’t match well with the more laid back Speyside nature, whisky dominating throughout, very little of the coffee and malt heavy base surviving as a result.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle at Peter’s 2nd annual spring gathering, supplied by Brian from 12%. Pours a gorgeous black with a thin tan head. Spicy whisky, roast and coffee. A little bit of isopropyl, roast and coffee. Very similar to the original, but with faint whisky notes throughout. Everything works fairly well together. Light alcohol on the finish. Yummy.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle at Peter’s RBSG, courtesy of Brian from 12% imports. Pours black with minimal tan head. Aroma is sharp of soy sauce, smoothed out by dark coffee bean and a slight hint of sweet vanilla bean. Flavor has more dark chocolate notes with coffee, licorice, and anise. Slightly chalky and oily body with a nutty finish. I didn’t really get any whisky notes, which is a plus for me. I prefer the classic version but wouldn’t take a pass on this.
