doublebock (196), USA Jul 17, 2009 Deep black color with very thick beige foam. Sweet malty aroma but not super distinctive. Excellent balance of subtle hop flavor with complex roasted coffee, dark fruit, and grapes. arminjewell (100), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jul 13, 2009 Poured thick velvety black with deep caramel head that laced nicely. Aroma of thick chocolate and coffee, with very little alcohol. Tastes of huge coffee and chocolate notes that is balanced well with bitter hop notes. Excellent stout! dkachur (2319), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Jul 12, 2009 500 mL bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours purely pitch black with a medium dark brown head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of rich roasted malt and chocolate notes. Taste is strong bitter coffee with lots of roasted malts. Bitter hop notes linger in the finish. Smooth silky body. Very nice beer. Hudspart (371), Hudsonville, Michigan, USA Jul 11, 2009 Wow. Great beer. Pours dark with a lot of carbonation. Aroma and flavor of coffee and chocoate. Best stout available. Not even close. Chef Chad (102), Grand Junction, Colorado, USA Jul 10, 2009 Smells roasted coffee beans and coffee and more coffee... Pours a very dark black with a wonderful brown thick head that last for days. Close to full body with ample carbonation, dry and smooth finish. Flavor is all coffee, some sweetened oat, some fruit on the back but but a lot. I do get some vanilla and other flavors but I not quite sure what they are.... I will let it warm up and maybe I can tell. FlyingTaco (112), Massachusetts, USA Jul 9, 2009 Original review date 6/3/2008...
Pours with ample carbonation. Jet-black root beer/motor oil body with huge pumpernickel head. Carbonation progresses slowly up through the lusciously viscous liquid.
Bittersweet chocolate malt, coffee and cinnamon sugar. Smells oily with some grassy/earthy hops. Nice stuff.
Slatey, dry stout feel-bitter coffee dominates at first when cold-a little more oiliness emerges with warmth.
Drinks silky-a little more shallow than expected, though. Charred bitter notes sustain through finish. Deeper and darker with warmth.
Pleasure to drink-a little lighter than expected. Solid, well-balanced and well-constructed.
markwise (1132), 15 Minutes from Kuhnhenn in, Florida, USA Jul 9, 2009 Thanks kiefdog for the share. Pours dark black with a foamy tan head. Nose is roasty- chicory, spice, earth, and some light smoke permeate this one. Flavor is similar with sweetness periodically. Bitter, coffee, and earthiness define this beer more than a sweet oatmeal stout. Pretty good overall.
