3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pour is midnight black with a medium tannish head. Aroma was a bit ash-like for me with notes of burnt charcoal/ashes, coffee, vanilla and tootsie rolls. I had a hard time getting past the nose of ashes, which was the most pronounced for me. Flavors were bakerís chocolate, coffee, with a moderate kick of hops and malts. I wanted to love this beer, but overall Iíd say it was above average. Drinkable, but not spectacular.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: JUL 7, 2008 Hop and coffee aroma. Brown/tan head with decent lace over dark motor oil body. Acidity reminiscent of a good, strong espresso and hops that feel slightly citrusy. Great balance, great hopping, brilliant!

Another re-rate of an old favourite where I lower the rating... where will it end? Of course, this is still a smashing beer but not quite as good as I remembered it. Used to be 9-5-9-5-18 but is now 8-5-8-2-17 for a bloody decent score of 4.2.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: OCT 5, 2010 Bottled at Horsens Beerfestival. Jet black with a small, dense, brown head. Chocolate, mocha, roased/burnt malt, coffee and lots of citrusy and piney hops in the aroma. The flavor is much the same delight, but feels a bit more pronounced. Fullbodied, with a long coffee-bitter and burnt finish. A balanced, yet hoppy beer. A bit too much for breakfast maybe, but delightful. Rating: 8-4-8-5-17-4.2. 061028
Bottle. Thereís some brownish notes in this black beer. The head is tan and of moderate size, leaving lacings. Thereís loads of freshly brewed black coffee on the nose, roasted and chocolatey, and with a lovely hoppyness giving some citrus and pine cones. The flavor is sweet with an underlying roasted bitterness. Black coffee, smooth heavily roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate and a fine citrusy, piney hop impact that leads my thoughts to a newly opened bag of hops. No molasses or dark sugars, no dried fruits. Still, itís damn fantastic with all itís complexity in a simple way. Can I write that? I mean, simple and complex in the same sentence. It might be a bit thin on the palate, but itís damn smooth, quite dry and it slides down dangerously easy. And as it warms up a bit, everything is lifted up to an even higher level. Thereís some alcohol too, all the way from the nose ítil after the last swallow, but itís just there to compliment the beer, it adds to the complexity and is just pleasant, almost relaxing. Nothing like the boozy alcohol found in strong euro-lagers, just a smooth, sneaking touch of warmth that suits this dark, rainy day very well. And the finish, it just donít disappear. The coffee and dark chocolate just lasts and last, I had to drink some water to get rid of it. Well, I didnít want that, so I had another sip and quit drinking the water. Oh, what a lovely beer, Iíll definitely have one with breakfast this weekend. I donít drink coffee, except when Mikkeller and other brewers put it in their beers, so a bacon, toast, marmalade, butter, milk and BGB breakfast will probably kickstart the day in wonderful way. I might even make some scrambled eggs and have some smoked salmon with it. Iím hungry already!
The last ten or twenty or so BGBís Iíve had has sort of disappointed, probably due to the wonderfullness of itís bigger brother Beer Geek Brunch Weasel. This BGB was the best Iíve ever had, it stood out even though it was drank after two lovely porters at the same ABV level. The combo of dry, roasted malts and coffee and hops did it for me. Damn, Iím glad I didnít just bring one bottle home. Cheers! 101005

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: MAY 23, 2007 Pours thick jet black with a creamy brown head, brilliant lace and retention. Aroma is very strong, of freshly ground coffee, caramel, fuggles hops and cocoa. As I sipped through the head, there seemed to be small chunks of coffee coming through, interesting but not all that nice... probably my biggest problem with the beer. Otherwise, it has a thick creamy feel in the mouth... Flavours of coffee, chicory, earthy hops, vegemite... its also very bitter from the hops, coffee and malts. The finish is long and bitter, roasty and warming. Great balance, amazing beer. In recent bottles Iíve bought, the roastiness and hops seems flatter, and not as enjoyable. Iíd have to say that I enjoy it as fresh as possible too.
