The aroma was strong coffee and dark fruit with a roasty and grassy component. The expresso coffee ruled the day and coupled with the roast, dark chocolate and raisin characteristics in the background led to a complex and interesting aroma. The beer poured into the glass pitch black with a ruby highlight and a dark brown frothy head which fell slowly and coated the glass from start to finish. The flavor was ultra smooth and silky with espresso coffee and roasted malts in excellent balance with nice chocolate and caramel. Raisins lurked in the flavor and that same nice grassy nature was present from the hops. The bittering was strong yet restrained by the malt. The finish was dry, but not bone dry, with lasting impressions of grass, coffee, chocolate and roast. The body was full and heading toward viscous with a less than moderate level of carbonation and an ultra smooth, silky and creamy texture on the palate. Some light alcohol presence was noted in the warming that occurred post consumption. This is a certainly an excellent and well made stout! 16.9 ounce bottle.

UPDATED: DEC 27, 2008 Bottle at home (thanks yngwie) Deep solid black ... with a thick brown head ... toasted malts and dark chocolate nose ... Thiner than i expected ... but lots of coffee and roast malts ... suprisingly little bitterness...Little sweetness in front with a charcoal roast linger with a nice piney burst of hops. tk2 side with brew dog coffee. Nose is a bit smoother and more hoppy ... quite burnt coffee quite hoppy in back ground... but actually remarkarbly simelar

Bottle from kmweaver and shared with the KC Crew at theisti’s tasting 10/12. Pours jet black with a thin creamy mocha head; a beautiful stout. Big coffee on the nose with lesser notes of chocolate and roasted malt. Medium-bodied and slick with a dry, roasted finish. The flavor follows the nose with solid fresh coffee, chocolate, roasted malt and a dry, mildly bitter hop finish. This is a remarkably well-made and well-balanced coffee stout. After a few run-ins with examples of the style that taste like 2-day-old, soggy Maxwell House grounds, this beer, along with Blind Tigers Java Porter have opened my eyes to how good they CAN be. Thanks again for sending this one, Ken!

Bottle. Pours a very dense, almost syrupy & oil like jet black with a generous beige head. Lots of coffee and roasted malts in the aroma, with some dark chocolate notes. Flavor, as expected, was heavy on the coffee/espresso, roasted malts with an inkling of some bitterness. somewhat on the sweet side. Very smooth and very easy to drink.

bottle acquired in trade. pours black with a creamy cocoa colored head. aroma of chocolate, dark roasted malts, coffee and bitterness possibly from the hops? flavor is the aroma. bitter like chicory w/o the aspirin dryness in the back of the throat. aftertaste of really nice coffee sticks around for a while. super creamy oatmeal texture. lacks depth and is kinda one dimensional....but so is a cup of coffee...

Pours a deep, rich, opaque black with a dense creamy brown head. A complex array of aromas greets the nose with dark chocolate, coffee, oatmeal, and dark fruit. Flavor is slightly more impressive with a the richness of flavors, dark chocoale, roasted coffee, and fruit . The body is full and smooth with a lingering roastedness on the palate.

THOUGHTS: A great beer. Maybe not worth the $14.50 I dropped on the bottle, but close. Sweet and bitter. Nice balance. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Appearance dark, opaque black with a huge, foamy, tan head that mostly diminished. The aroma was heavy strong coffe malt, cream and salt. The initial flavor was lightly sweet, moderately bitter and salty, while the finsh was heavily sweet and bitter, and slaty with an average duration. The flavor had some chocolate but was mostly coffee. It’s like a sweetened coffee. Just a little bit of almost soapy hop bitterness that keeps it from being perfect. The medium to full body was oily and syrupy with soft carbonation and a slightly chalky, moderately to heavily astringent finish.

Original bottling acquired from Bager...Thanks Lars! This beer poured a really nice brownish black with a great looking burnt brown head that lasted for just about the entirety of the beer. A decent presence of roasted black coffee in the aroma melded with chocolates and other dark/burnt malts. Flavors area good combination of the chocolate and coffee, but just not as overpowering as I was hoping for in such a highly regarded coffee impy stout. The flavor also not so great presence of unwanted coffee astringency. Overall a little disappointed by something I really wanted to love, but now that it is in the states I have been able to get a few more bottles and will look forward to revisiting it.

Bottle. Black with a lasting brown head. Powerful aroma of roasted malt and coffee. Malt and chocolate in taste together with good bitterness. Better than orange juice for breakfast!
