This is a beastly roast oatmeal and coffee flavor that just sits on your chest. Dry, powdery texture. Charcoal and grain round out the aromas and experience. Ka bam. MrRain (416), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA Dec 10, 2008 Bottled, poured into a snifter: Starting temperature at 39 degrees F. MBGB pours black with complete opacity. The head is large and brown, leaving strati of lacing. This is a beautiful beer. The aroma is predominately oatmeal and a surprisingly noticeable hop sting. The body is full, chewy and just a bit oily. The oatmeal smoothness rounds out the coffee bitterness quite nicely. The medium-to-high alcohol content does not make an appearance in the flavor or palate, bringing down the complexity of the beer. This does not detract from the beer as it is classified as a stout and not an imperial stout. The finish is grainy and brings to mind course bread. This would be a wonderful beer to drink with cheese soup. All in all this is easily one of the top three stouts along with Hitachino Nest Expresso Stout and Bells Kalamazoo Stout. HomeBrewHawk (266), De Soto, Kansas, USA Dec 7, 2008 500ml bottle served in a snifter. Bottle conditioned. Poured a deep brown/black with a big finger of fine bubbled tan head. Lots of coffee and chocolate in the aroma along with a bit of cocoa. Very rich mouthfeel. More coffee and chocolate malt in the flavor. Long lasting, very dry chocolate/coffee finish. There is also a fair amount of hop bitterness towards the end. Good beer, lives up to the hype for the most part. At the price, it will not be in my regular rotation, but a must try. mikalooch (158), , New Jersey, USA Dec 7, 2008 Bottle. Pours black with a nice creamy head which leaves a nice lacing. sweetened coffee in the nose with some hints of smoke underneath. Very well balanced, its seems bitter but then the sweetness comes through, with milk finally balancing it all out. Thick beer, very hearty.
Smooth and drinkable. Fine beer. hirigalzkar (550), Stockholm, Sweden Dec 6, 2008 Bottle. Black. Big, thick, thick brown head. Lots of lots of taste and aroma. Chocolate. Coffee. Smoked flavors. Roasted flavors. Milk. Malt. Still very smooth and well balanced. OD40oz (600), Box Elder, South Dakota, USA Dec 6, 2008 Updated: Jan 6, 2009Holy crap this was a great beer!! Darker than dark like well-used motor oil. You cant see a hint of light through this beer even if you hold it in front of a spotlight. Slight roasty coffee smell. Refreshing roasted malty taste with a good dry coffee flavored finish. I was totally impressed with this beer. The guy at our local specialty liquor store said he had a hard time getting a dependable quantity from the distributor. Not quite as good as Arrogant Bastard but pretty damn close. lassem (296), Copenhagen, Denmark Dec 3, 2008 Bottle - 50 cl. A mistery why I havn´t rated this before. Yhis one is one of my all time favorites.... don´t leave home without it. Poura a pitch black with a nice foamy and lasting cappuchino-brown head. The nose is fresh with strongle amarican fruity . hoppy notes, coffee and black chocolate. The palate is smooth and creemy with a mouthfeel that pets you like a kitten. The taste is clearly oatmeal, roasted malts and lots of fresh hops and coffee with a bit of vanilla. The finish is round and bitter dominated of the cofee flavour with a little hint of alcohol Travlr (700), Washington, Washington DC, USA Nov 28, 2008 Black, black, black. Chocolatey, bitter, and flavors of chocolate. Nice find.
