Smaskifa (56), Oslo, Norway Sep 6, 2008 0,5 l bottle. Pours a nice thick lasting brown lid, leaves traces all the way down the glass. Aroma of heavy dark choclate and coffee, burnt malt. Nice balanced carbonation, feels tingly in the mouth, but still a rather thick body. Tastes a lot of dark choclate and coffee, well balanced roasted malt gives a nice taste of smoke. Some hoppy bitterness in the finish. Excellent beer. I haven’t tried at breakfast, but it works very well with choclate deserts. blutt59 (2042), Dallas, Texas, USA Sep 4, 2008 bottle, color is dense black brown, starts with a large foamy head that fades to ring, nose is a sweet caramel coffee, flavor is a very smooth bitter espresso with a roasty bitter chocolate and malty finish, slightly metallic darn1207 (529), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Sep 4, 2008 bottle. jet black pour with a huge thick brown head that slowly dissipated. aroma of coffee, roasted malts and some spice (light cinnamon maybe). flavors of burnt caramel and coffee. sweet malts balance things - but the bitterness is long and even - tough to explain, but somehow different than similar minded stouts I’ve had. the texture is thick and slightly chalky on the finish. If I were a wealthy alcoholic, this would definitely be my drink of choice in the morning. K-8.5 IlanMan (816), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA Sep 4, 2008 Bottle two year aged: Pours a hefty dark black thick with a dark tan head. Aroma is quite complex with sweet malt, coffee, high roasted malt, oats, chocolate. Flavors are the same but very well blended. Extremely smooth mouth feel due to the oats. I’m a fan of the style for sure. They say this goes well with breakfast but I think it IS a breakfast! BrewCzar (108), St Louis, Missouri, USA Sep 1, 2008 Bottle pours black with a big brown head. Flavour is burnt malt bitterness, dark roast coffee.
Nice sharp bitterness in the finish.
Obviously I like the hop combined with the dark roast coffee biterness and a creamy oatmeal undertones. EHopper (274), Minnesota, USA Aug 31, 2008 The deep coffee flavor is strongly accented with burnt fruit wood, with all kinds of grains and malts mixed in. I love that there is also a balanced amount of bitters from what I suppose to be a goodly amount of hops. Even a dryish finish. I need to put up a bit of this for when friends are over. kegbear (265), Orange, California, USA Aug 31, 2008 Bottle. Roasted malt flavor. Strong burnt coffee and chocolate tones. Finishes with a nice hop bitterness.
