arjoseph (594), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 22, 2008 Bottle purchased and enjoyed at Kulminator, Antwerp. Smells of port, melted chocolate, and alcohol, with a bit of wet coffee bitterness testifying to the roasted malts and hops. Taste is roasty at first on lively carbonation; the middle gets creamy with dark chocolate semi-sweetness and fuller body, the chocolate turning dry like Baker’s chocolate until he dry coffee grounds in the finish. Pours completely opaque with an unremarkable head, appetizing like all stouts but nothing special. Tasty, but the feel was not as dynamic, smooth, or full as I like in my stouts (I guess it’s not as big as I thought at only 7.5%). I’d prefer Founder’s Breakfast or Peche Mortel. LilBeerDoctor (1480), East Setauket, New York, USA May 21, 2008 Bottle. Wow this is a pretty beer! Pours black with a dark brown head. Aroma is awesome as well, dominated by coffee and chocolate. The aroma is not overpowered by roast, as I often find with many other stouts. Also a rich sweetness from the malt and unfermented sugars makes this aroma irresistable. Flavor is lots of coffee, sweet malt, well-balanced. This beer has a very nice mouthfeel with the richness of an imperial stout. The first time that I had this beer, I was unimpressed. But after having many other stouts, imperial stouts, and porters and trying this again, I was incredibly impressed! A very well-crafted beer by Mikkeller. SvendNielsen (11), Denmark May 19, 2008 Har været bedre. Pitch black hue. Moldy taupe head. Crazy aromas. Pepper, BandAida and minty spices. Wow! Big nose. Cocoa and dark rich chocolate. Good amount of aromatic burn with a nice citrus zest. Full bodied and rich. Over the top! Floods the palate. Sweet sticky malts. Coffee acidity and a nice cookie note. Burnt citrus. Polling bitter palate. Espresso. Toffee. Lotta alcohol for only 7.5? Big hop too. Big all the way through. Raisins citrus piney hop character. Blam! RomanW70 (297), Providence, Rhode Island, USA May 16, 2008 Updated: May 28, 2008Pours dark, dark brown with a thick tan head. Strong sweet coffee aroma. Intitia taste of dark roast coffee, sliding smoothly into a huge, lastng bitter finish. The coffee really dominates here. Medium carbonation and silky mouthfeel. Excellent beer. Pinball (2685), Allerød, Denmark May 16, 2008 Updated: Jan 17, 2009Great aroma, looks great too, flavor is as advertised, i’d love one of those for breakfirst, if i had a hangover. One of the best stout i’ve tasted, it is a bit on the smokey end of the spectre. I had a chance to check it hed2head against ølfabrikken’s porter (bottle version) and ØF’s brew was more balanced, but also had a sour/aged tone, which this one had not. Mikkeler’s BGB stout is a little better imo. Great brew. i’m going to stash up.
