hopheadfett (50), Oak Ridge, New Jersey, USA Aug 16, 2009 Pours black, gigantic brown head, excellent lace. Nose of coffee, molasses, citrus/hop?. Taste is initially sour, turns sweet, then hits with a strong coffee flavor, finishes hoppy with slight bitterness. I also get some soy sauce stuck on my tongue after a sip, very complex stuff going on in this beer. Absolutely a treat, the balance is incredible with this many flavors going on. Miksu (2194), Jyväskylä, Finland Aug 16, 2009 0.5 l bottle from Alko. Pitch black with thick tan head. The aromas of coffee, salty licorice, citrusy-mentholy hops and warming alcohol. Thick strongly coffeish bittersweet flavor with salty licorice and piney hops. Initially thick, sweet and creamy palate which soon turns into dry, burnt, slightly astringent charcoal finish. Very uncompromising with strong coffeish and hoppy flavor and burnt finish. Slightly too overpowering for me but still pleasant to drink. If this wasn’t first beer of the day, I might have given more points. TheGB (40), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Aug 14, 2009 Has a great aroma of chocolate and roasted barley. Taste is of coffee and more roasted barley. Not as much coffee and oatmeal as I might have expected, more like a really strong stout. jefcon (997), Arlington, Virginia, USA Aug 14, 2009 Deep, lush brown in color with a lasting head and a beautiful look in the glass. Aromas of chocolate nibs, chocolate cake, dry roast coffee. Rich malty flavors of peat, coffee, oats, and an espresso finish. The emphasis on malts is so well-balanced it nearly overshadows the hops in the beer. The slight pine complements the long finish of the beer and it really all comes together at the end. Rustyham (552), miami, Florida, USA Aug 13, 2009 Bitter black coffee with a little hazelnut. The Oatmeal really smooths it out and lets it slide silkity in your mouth. Fantastic beear, made better as it warms. Really dark body with a really dark head, large bubbles. Rockin’ good stuff, kid. Bottle from Knightly Spiritss in Orlando. LtDan (471), LA - Originally from South NJ!, California, USA Aug 13, 2009 Appearance: Pours a midnight brown with a sturdy ring of khaki colored foam on top. The beer almost looks creamy or frothy.
Aroma: A nice, freshly prepared cup of coffee.
Taste: Acidic, medium roasted coffee and roasty malts. Some chocolate sweetness goes in between the coffee bitterness.
Mouthfeel: A silky smooth texture.
Overall: The best coffee stout I have had to date. Really impressive, and gets better once it hits room temperature. DandyWolfFloyd (331), Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 13, 2009 The Norwegians have perfected the stout, and this is further proof. The appearance is a very dark, oil black color totally opaque, with a well developed fully frothy brownish tan fluffy chocolate milk head that slowly subsides, into a thin 1/4 inch tan slice of foam, like all good head it comes to and, no pun intended, but with this head your close to spent by then. Flavors range from a black coffee, hazlenut coffee, to tobacco, ultra dark roasty oak. What it has in flavor it lacks in aroma, there remains a very earthy quality, with a somewhat present dark roasty barley malt alcohol aroma, as it warms to a more appropriate temperature the tobacco notes really become enhanced. For such a flavorful beer the finish is utterly smooth, almost no char left in the palate, just a slight tinge of roasty bitter, as the beer warms to ideal temperature it’s tannins take on a more pronounced bitter flavor and finish. As a side note, this beer is an excellent partner to a black and mild, or other chocolate dominant cigar. Of course the better the cigar, the more intoxicating the experience. thooper41 (384), Oregon, USA Aug 11, 2009 500mL bottle: appearance is pitch black with brown head, aroma is of roasted malt chocolate and hints of coffee, flavor has lots of chocolate and roasted malt but isn’t the top notch stout I was looking for. Want the best get speedway this just doesn’t cut it for me.
