CharlesDarwin (1380), State College, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 14, 2007 22 Oz Bottle via footy. Luxurious soft, cottony cream flows from the glass, backed with bourbon soaked fruits of yellow plains. Fresh coffee roast, dappled with light barbecue and nibblings of tobacco. Rich and right there, but not out of control. An extremely decent coffee stout nose, detailed and inviting. Pours the color of ink, with a teak fringe and fast fading rim of espresso love. Flavor is a well built, yet quickly moving dry stout. There’s the palpable sea beans, bright saltine cracker, and clam juice intertwining with toffees, coffee-tinted chocolate and long roastiness. A real impression of dryness throughout, but not acidity, bitterness or harshness. No detectable alcohol. Some interesting yeast products, with some bites of ester that mingle with the fruitiness of the coffee and play off the salty, grain-earth dryness. A long draw sup of detectable minty hops mingle with a glass of sherry. If anything, phenomenal brewing. Surprisingly not overly bold, in my opinion. Tending towards a more restrained, mature presentation of a well integrated oatmeal coffee stout. Thanks Rudy!
blutt59 (679), Dallas, Texas, USA Sep 4, 2008 bottle, color is dense black brown, starts with a large foamy head that fades to ring, nose is a sweet caramel coffee, flavor is a very smooth bitter espresso with a roasty bitter chocolate and malty finish, slightly metallic darn1207 (254), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Sep 4, 2008 bottle. jet black pour with a huge thick brown head that slowly dissipated. aroma of coffee, roasted malts and some spice (light cinnamon maybe). flavors of burnt caramel and coffee. sweet malts balance things - but the bitterness is long and even - tough to explain, but somehow different than similar minded stouts I’ve had. the texture is thick and slightly chalky on the finish. If I were a wealthy alcoholic, this would definitely be my drink of choice in the morning. K-8.5 IlanMan (529), Winona, Minnesota, USA Sep 4, 2008 Bottle two year aged: Pours a hefty dark black thick with a dark tan head. Aroma is quite complex with sweet malt, coffee, high roasted malt, oats, chocolate. Flavors are the same but very well blended. Extremely smooth mouth feel due to the oats. I’m a fan of the style for sure. They say this goes well with breakfast but I think it IS a breakfast! BrewCzar (62), St Louis, Missouri, USA Sep 1, 2008 Bottle pours black with a big brown head. Aroma is distinctly coffee with hints of sweet roasted malts. The taste has a strong coffee/espresso presence with hints of roasted caramel and chocolate malts. Trev (493), Lakeville, Minnesota, USA Aug 31, 2008 pours a dark black with a very thick creamy brown head.
Aroma is nice chocolately roast malt. some coffee, and sweet oatmeal tones. hop bitterness pushiing through...
Flavour is burnt malt bitterness, dark roast coffee.
Nice sharp bitterness in the finish.
Obviously I like the hop combined with the dark roast coffee biterness and a creamy oatmeal undertones.
