Pours black with a small head and good lacing. Flavor is very tasty chocolate with roasted dark malts, oats and coffee. Palate is creamy and smooth. A perfect coffee stout. nuplastikk (1261), Madison, Wisconsin, USA

This beer is really quite delicious. Lots of chocolate and roasted malt flavor. The oats give it a nice creamy mellow body and the coffee delivers a subtle sweet bitterness in the finish. Completely overpriced, completely world class. Brigadier (1260), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA

Thanks to Drew for picking up a bottle of this for me a few months ago. I’ve just now gotten around to giving it a try in celebration of rating 775. I’m a little disappointed to find this is not a Top 50 beer. Instead it is simply a solid coffee stout with some buzz. At the cost of a bomber I’m not likely to pick up another one unless it is for trade.
Aroma / Appearance - The black oily body was just as I expected a top flight stout to look. The dark tan head lingered for a while before deciding to subside. Chocolate, black coffee, anise and peanut butter mud pie intermingled in a solid but not earth shattering combination. I was expecting just a little but more complexity but could not find it.
Flavor / Palate - Black coffee and plum tickle the tongue before the watery mouthfeel hits the throat. It’s not so thin as to be lifeless but did not meet my expectations. The finish reminds me of a cheap breakfast of slightly overcooked toast, dry plain oatmeal and coffee made from beans which have been burned. While it is a solid cohesive beer I was not blown away. Still your mileage may vary so give it a try if you like stouts. WISEGUY572 (1252), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Mar 18, 2008 This has seemed perfect both times I;ve had a bottle. Pour is gorgeous, brown to black body with a large dark brown head. Nose of dark chocolate and coffee. Taste of sweet and bitter coffee, dark malts, and chocolate, with a big, round, velvet feel. Long bitter coffee finish. Great fun. I loved it but I’m trying to keep it in perspective, given my other ratings. Ober (1242), Bommelerwaard, Netherlands
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Apr 17, 2009 At tasting session by Joes. A black colored beer, with a thick foamy beige head. The aroma of smoke/roated malts, dark chocolate and coffee. The taste is dry with coffee, some dark chocolate. It’s bitter in a gentle way, with notes of dark fruits. The aftertaste is bitter and dry. jimmack (1221), Nutley, New Jersey, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 19, 2006 Updated: Jul 26, 2007Bottle at RBSG ’06. Black in color with a rich tan head. Aroma was mild coffee, dark roasted malts and milk chocolate. Flavor was more intense than the aroma. The coffee really came on, along with sweet roasted malts and finishing with a rich chocolate finish. I had this a few weeks ago at a Heavyweight open house and wasn’t overly impressed. I can only guess that it lost something in the shipping over to the states because this one from Ungstrup was beautiful. luckygirl (1221), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 15, 2007 Bomber. Beautiful appearance. Beer is opaque very dark brown/black with a largish, light brown, creamy/frothy head. Diminishes slowly and mostly lasts. Affectionate lace curtain draping.
First impression clangs with pine, creamy malts and strong acidic coffee. Malty with heavy notes of roasted grain, creamy oatmeal, dark chocolate milk, coffee, light note of vaguely fruity molasses; Hoppy with heavy notes of herbal resin; Yeasty with a moderate note of damp. crawly basement; Moderate note of dark French Roasted coffee.
The flavor is moderately sweet, moderately/heavily bitter, lightly acidic with a long, moderately sweet, lightly acidic, light/moderately bitter finish. Generic coffee in the retronasal return.
The body is full, the texture is watery/velvety and the carbonation is soft/lively. Swank on the palate.
I’ve been looking forward to this meeting, and I want to be blown away, but, honestly, I’m not. For me, it’s terroir-driven subtleties that make a great coffee-infused stout. Here, those subtleties feel masked by high-alpha hop and over-generous roast. Nothing wrong here at all, in fact there are few quite good things happening. But a phenomenon? Eh...
