| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 26, 2007 Bottle from Capone’s of the 22 ounce variety. The pour was onyx with 2-fingers of dark brown head; one of the brownest heads I’ve witnessed. The aroma was huge chocoff, dark patent malt, molasses. The palate is hefty, complex, and rich, providing flavors of roasty patent malt, fine espresso coffee, rich chocolate, and molasses. This one is very smooth, well balanced, and you want to chug it after a few sips. This one deserves all the accolades it has received. Lubiere (4557), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Head is initially large, frothy, brown, mostly lasting.
Body is opaque black (flashlight tested).
Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (roasted grain, chocolate, coffee), moderately hoppy (grapefruit, resin), with a note of chalk.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter.
Medium body, creamy texture, soft/lively carbonation.
Second try and still not that enjoyable; overly hoppy nose (seems more American than European) and the malt-and-coffee character is surprisingly not very compelling. Quite acidic. Awesome appearance and a very good mouthfeel, but that’s about it. HenrikSoegaard (4444), Randers, Denmark

Powerfull licorice/coffee flavor. Not too much coffee as I had feared. Creamy palate. muzzlehatch (4427), Burlington, Vermont, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Mar 2, 2006 500 ml bottle, Montreal Sourheads gathering on February 26 2006. Thick, full black body with a dark lasting somewhat foamy head....gobs and gobs of woody, resinous hops are the first thing the nose essays, dark chocolaty-espresso malts are also present and just a touch of Burgundy....the tongue is instantly assaulted by vastly bitter chocolate, part of a harsh burnt-coffee-malt complexity that lingers through to the finish....but sweet, milky lighter cocoa tastes arrive after midpalate, taming the roaring cowboy coffee that is boiling away at the back of the throat...smooth, creamy, even milky mouthfeel belies the rich bitterness, doesn’t ever tame it but makes it oh-so-palatable....touches of raisin and light wine deepen the mystery, the beauty. No disappointment, this. bhensonb (4406), Woodland, California, USA

Aromas of dark roasted malt, coffee and plummy fruit. Near medium body with heavy, creamy carbonation. Strong bitter coffee, smooth malt, burnt toast. Finish is coffee and burnt bitter, but it’s very nicely done. Everything works quite well together.
