4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 DruncanVeasey (6179) - NUNEATON, Blue Square Premier, Warwickshire, - JUL 31, 2009UPDATED: JAN 18, 2011 1)Bottle from Briskeby Vinmonopolet, Oslo. Inky pitch with a well behaved, filthy yellow collar going the distance. Nose marmite on charred wholemeal ,coffee grounds, grapefruit juice and husky malt. Slick and creamy, no prickling b/c fizz and acidity like the last beer (Dark Force), fine savoury espresso and cocoa ashiness; Twiglets, bitter nutty malt, grapefruit hop and charred barley linger. Good but not great, and a bit one dimensional. 747415= 3.7.
2) Pint at The Penguin, batch 471. Black like oil with a solid, grey-tan bloom of head settling down like Guinness. Aroma of blackcurrant, plastic, cinder toffee and high cocoa dark chocolate. Fat and viscous with a Lindt 80%, burnt toast, burnt pistachio, grapefruit and ashtray Friij milkshake mouthfeel approaching perfection. The hop and carbon bitterness is immense, but streaked with blackberry, apple and blackcurrant like a true stout. Just hugely drinkable and terrifyingly easy to drink by the pint- again, like a true stout. Some alcohol numbness on the lips, but none elsewhere. Not really getting any gourmet coffee, but then I wouldn’t know what it tastes like. Bags of ash and very dark chocolate. Incinerated nut husk, blackcurant and dark chocolate ice cream, dead leaf burps. Deeply impressive- upgraded to 848416.

Black color, small brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate and licorice. Taste is dry sweet with bitter finish and long coffee aftertaste. Full body, soft carbonation. Nice full-flavored stout.

UPDATED: JUN 18, 2013 Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours thick and black with a centimeter of bronze head. Smooth and full-bodied without being overly carbonated. Heavy chocolate and coffee notes on the nose with an added sweetness of caramel. Silky smooth - drinks almost like a milkshake, and hides the booze very well. Finishes with a nice, lingering bitterness. A hulking, ebony monstrosity of an oatmeal coffee stout that without a doubt stands shoulder to shoulder with some of the best.

Pours black with a thick brown head. Aroma is wicker basket with chocolate in the background. Taste is smooth burnt malts with a chocolatey background. A lot of stuff going on in this one. Picking up fig, tamarindo, but no coffee. This is an example of a truly complex stout. Dark bitter finish.

They say that Pope Paul III fell on his knees when Michelangelo finally unveiled the completed Last Judgment at the Sistine Chapel. Before trying this much hyped beer, I was very sceptical of its artsy-fartsiness, especilly by those coffee grains figured on the appalling label. Ready to snigger with despise, I had to concede that the appearance was perfect, and the aroma was only above average. But when I finally drank it, I fell on my knees and cried, asking for forgiveness and most thanking all the Gods for this opportunity. The new ones and the old ones.

Pours thick black with a thin tan head. Aroma is weird and off, but the taste is crazy roasted coffee with a dry bitterness aftertaste and some kind of mossy peat notes.that isn’t too pleasant.. I see the great ratings on this, maybe I got a bad bottle? Not that great but decent.

Medium brown head. Black as the night. Cocoa and coffee on the nose. Taste of burned coffee and cocoa. Mouthfeel is amazing for this one, almost milky. Really nice stout.

330ml bottle - pours deep brown with nutty brown head and great lacing Nose is milk chocolate, coffee and nuts. Flavor enhances the coffee notes giving it a more roasted character. I wouldn’t have this for breakfast because I like my morning coffee to be hot. Fairly gritty like coffee is when the filter is of pour quality. Hides the 7.5% very well. bitter like black coffee. Makes me think of what Turkish coffee would be like, if served cold. Becomes a little sweeter as it warms.
