jerc (3114), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Nov 25, 2007 Bottle. Finally getting around to rating this after procuring some through inertiaboy and Bieropholie (the website not the brewery). Dark black body with a massive creamy brown Aero bar like head. Fairly acidic roat in the aroma at first, plentiful accents of chocolate and mocha. Flavour is surprisingly bitter both from the hops and roast malt/coffee bitterness. Gets smoothed out by an underlying sweet malt and chocolate base. The bottle has been waiting for me for a while so I am wondering if the coffee has mellowed somewhat in the meantime. If so it was for the better in my opinion, I was expecting much more of a coffee-bomb, which would not have been to my liking as much. Smooth full bodied palate. Very nice!
blutt59 (679), Dallas, Texas, USA Sep 4, 2008 bottle, color is dense black brown, starts with a large foamy head that fades to ring, nose is a sweet caramel coffee, flavor is a very smooth bitter espresso with a roasty bitter chocolate and malty finish, slightly metallic darn1207 (254), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Sep 4, 2008 bottle. jet black pour with a huge thick brown head that slowly dissipated. aroma of coffee, roasted malts and some spice (light cinnamon maybe). flavors of burnt caramel and coffee. sweet malts balance things - but the bitterness is long and even - tough to explain, but somehow different than similar minded stouts I’ve had. the texture is thick and slightly chalky on the finish. If I were a wealthy alcoholic, this would definitely be my drink of choice in the morning. K-8.5 IlanMan (529), Winona, Minnesota, USA Sep 4, 2008 Bottle two year aged: Pours a hefty dark black thick with a dark tan head. Aroma is quite complex with sweet malt, coffee, high roasted malt, oats, chocolate. Flavors are the same but very well blended. Extremely smooth mouth feel due to the oats. I’m a fan of the style for sure. They say this goes well with breakfast but I think it IS a breakfast! BrewCzar (62), St Louis, Missouri, USA Sep 1, 2008 Bottle pours black with a big brown head. Aroma is distinctly coffee with hints of sweet roasted malts. The taste has a strong coffee/espresso presence with hints of roasted caramel and chocolate malts. Trev (493), Lakeville, Minnesota, USA Aug 31, 2008 pours a dark black with a very thick creamy brown head.
Aroma is nice chocolately roast malt. some coffee, and sweet oatmeal tones. hop bitterness pushiing through...
Flavour is burnt malt bitterness, dark roast coffee.
Nice sharp bitterness in the finish.
Obviously I like the hop combined with the dark roast coffee biterness and a creamy oatmeal undertones.
