Bottle. Obviously the packaging means nothing to the quality of the beer inside, but damn, this is one fine looking bottle with the capsule covered in off white wax. Completely black with a fine espresso coloured head that is very impressive and lasting for a beer with this alcohol content. The aroma is packed with Islay whisky notes of tar, Lapsang Souchon tea, seawater and peat smoke. Combine this with classic stout notes of coffee, chocolate and liqourice and add a generous amount of hops and you’re there! Big and surprisingly velvety on the palate. This beer does contain noticeable amounts of residual sugar, but for once this doesn’t make the beer cloying but instead gives it incredible balance vis a vis the bitterness from the hops and the acidity from the roasted malts and the coffee. An outstanding beer that I may re-rate at a later stage and I wouldn’t be surprised if it scores even higher then.

Backlog rating. Bottle from Etre. It pours a dark brown color with a small brown head. Aroma is smokey with notes of ashtray, plastic, wood, roasted salmon, vanilla, dark chocolate, espresso toffee. Taste is sweet and chalky at the same time, with notes of roasted malts, seaweed, band-aid, bacon, licorice, wood, vanilla, dark chocolate and coffee. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Overall, very tasty

Köpt från Boxbeer. Svart färg med smutsbrun skumkrona. Doft av krutrök, torv och tjära. Söt, torr och syrlig som ett isterband. Smak av rökta charkuterier, lakritspastill, tjära och choklad. Torra efterklanger.

Tap at Fairbar. Black body with no head. Great sweet aroma with liquorice and fruit. The taste is very rich, with lots of sweetness and an extreme amount of coffee. Lots of roasted malts, with a bit of smoke from the barrels and also a pinch of saltiness. Full body with low carbonation. The finish is dominated by the liquorice. I savoured the first sips but then it started to go downhill. The overwhelming sweetness and low carbonation make this beer very cloying. I had a small pour but by the time I was halfway through, I did not feel like finishing it. The balance was axed in the pursuit of extremity.

Draught at Mikkeller. Rich dark coffee character, brown sugar, spicy whiskey bite, notes of tobacco and licorice, dry finish. Quite smooth and balanced for such a big beer.

Bottle shared with Tom. Opaque oily black pour with thin orange layer of foam. Aroma is really intriguing, nice soft smoky aromas, rich licorice and coffee, light molasses. Taste is super delicious, rich flavors, smoky, light molasses, umami notes, very light leather, brown sugar, extremely tasty, very well calibrated, very flavorful and not too sweet. Palate is full bodied but never cloying, full carbonation. Very tasty, especially for a style (scotch barrel aged stouts) I usually despise, this is incredibly good.

How: Botttle (330 ml). Split 2-ways with JulienHuxley.

>>> A wonderfully executed Islay barrel-aged RIS, which is the exception. Very tasty stuff!

- Black with a medium oily beige head and little lacing.
- Nice scotch aroma, not overpowering and well complemented by a chocolate, roasted malts, caramel... surprisingly well balanced.
- It’s also well balanced in taste with a solid malt backbone, nice Islay presence, roasted malts, caramel, chocolate... really nice.
- Full bodied, moderate carbonation, nice warming finish.
- Really complex and suprisingly (!) not cloying at all. I easy finish my glass and would have welcomed more.

Flavors: Islay, chocolate, caramel, iodine, peat, roasted malts, mild spiciness, a bit of alcohol and oak.
