Huge in your face coffee nose, hints of chocolate and toffee. Astonishing nose. Flavor is great but one dimensional in its awesomeness. Massive espresso roast up front with some light caramel and chocolate in the middle. Super roasty bitterness finishes. Lingering cappucino notes. Full bodied with soft carbonation but its lacking the heavy mouth of some of the bigger impys. A fantastic beer. Pours a dark black with a creamy brown head that fades down with spotty lacing. Lots of roast, coffee, and a earthy burnt wood note. Creamy thick body coffee, molasses, burnt malts, chocolate, are strong and extremely tasty. Some hints of fruit and smoke, but the coffee and chocolate is the show. The nose is coffee, burnt sugar, chocolate, roasted barley, and other charred substances. The flavor is deep dark chocolate, burnt coffee and brown sugar, very roasted barley, nuts, and a touch of smoke. Very creamy texture tends to completely coat the palate, making picking out individual nuances difficult. Aroma is roast, mocha, chocoalte, and coffee. Nice, but not real intense. The flavor is a strong and rich espresso strain laced with chocolate, roast, and light bitters. This is silky, smooth, and rich. I’m not picking up and complexities, nor do I want to. Each sip is consistently rich and delicious. I would drink this all the time if I could afford it... Having sat on this for a while I felt like rating #1050 was as good a time as any to crack open a world class imperial stout. At $15.99 I was not going to just pop it open for the heck of it. I was not disappointed; in fact I almost wish I had another bottle. If it weren’t for the huge backlog of Top 200ish beers to sample I’d buy another tomorrow.
Aroma / Appearance - Thick and creamy the oily fluid soaks up every ounce of light. A deep khaki head graced the top like a sheet of thick icing on a dark cupcake. Roasted expresso, licorice, coffee, baker’s chocolate, smoke, and maple syrup kept alternating in a thick cloud that could have been admired for days.
Flavor / Palate - Warming the mouthfeel fills every crevice with a full combination of coffee, rich thick creamy chocolate, anise, and liquid fudge. The plum aftertaste marks the beer that leaves a definite impression on the senses. Also present is a dry smoke like the bottom of a cool fire. Overall this has no flaws and should rank right up there with other excellent imperial stouts such as Dark Lord and Darkness.
