4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours pitch black with a brown sparkling head that dissipates into the dark void in a matter of seconds. Intense aroma of dark roasted coffee, sweet licorice and some alcohol. Full body, creamy feel, soft carbonation. Rich and smoky flavour of the darkest chocolate imaginable, coffee that would wake you right up in the morning and a hint of cough drop for good measure. Long finish with a deliciously subdued bitterness. Love it!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. This inky black beer has dark brown highlights and pours with absolutely no head. It has very rich chocolate praline flavours, vanilla and coffee notes with liquorice and more super rich Belgian chocolate on the spicy red fruity finish. Excellent!

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Smells of bitter chocolate & has a huge chocolate taste, surprisingly more than coffee. It is like drinking smooth, 85% cocoa chocolate with some coffee in the complex, caramel finish. A lot less dry than some of the other Beer Geeks I've had but all the better for it. No wonder this has become a modern classic!

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a deep viscous black burgundy with no head and low carb. Arina is strong fine espresso with sone cocoa treacle a d salty notes. Flavor is rich bitter coffee with vanilla and torrified coffee very intense but balnced. Medium to heavy palate. Super complex but still quite drinkable.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
11.2 oz bottle, poured into a snifter at room temperature.
A: Pours a level of black that should probably emit Hawking radiation, while forming a very thin, very dark brown head that dissipates quickly and leaves no trace at all - no cap, no ring, maybe a couple stray bubbles temporarily along the sides of the glass. In other words, nothing escapes it. I’m guessing it’s somewhat high gravity. (These jokes should all go under one of Mikkeller’s other beers, but they fit better with the appearance of this one.)
S: The aroma, which somehow manages to escape the event horizon of the beer surface, strikes up front as sweet with dark fruitiness throughout. Both roasted chocolate malt and sweeter notes are present, as one would expect from an oatmeal stout. Fruity notes include plums, figs, and currants. Despite one of the main ingredients, I detect no litterbox odors - perhaps those simply aren’t shunted away from the singularity during dilation. Oddly enough, I get little to no coffee odor as well.
T: Unexpectedly, this beer did not tear my tongue apart and then crush it into an infinitesimally tiny ball of matter, so that’s a plus. Toffee and chocolate malts strike up front, joined shortly by a quick rush of more fruity notes ranging from plum to currant. As the beer moves along the palate, an earthy, burnt bitter flavor swirls in to conceal the rest, which in turn yields to an almost pure coffee taste at the finish. A pleasant roasted coffee aftertaste lingers well after the swallow, markedly less bitter than any other coffee I have tasted aside from pure Kona coffee in Kailua-Kona itself.
M: Smooth and silken, with scarcely any carbonation to be found nor tasted - literally just enough to leave the beer not feeling dead and lifeless in the mouth. It’s not the heaviest oatmeal stout I’ve ever tasted, which is surprising given the amount of mass it should have, but it compares decently to others in the style.
O: Eminently drinkable, this hides its ABV well behind a wall of shifting flavor complexity. I would consider buying again. One could say it has a powerful attractive force. All right, I’ll knock off the lame black hole jokes. Suffice it to say, despite being made with crap, this is far from a crappy beer.

4.4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draft at BD Shoreditch 22/11/13, bottle at home 5/7/14. Pours daaark brown, small head dies off. Amazing intense sweet coffee roast chocolate aroma, so good. Intense rich sweet molasses vanilla chocolate, then bitter coffee, some hop bitterness too, great depth, a touch of acidity too. Big body, silky smooth. This is one of my very favourite beers, I love it.

4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Aroma: coffee, spice, cocoa, milk, red berries; Appearance: dense dark brown, vanishing minimal frothy brown head; Taste: intense bitterness, medium sweetness, slight sourness; Palate: long finish, thick texture, soft carbonation, medium body
A complex, multifaceted beer. Could be just a bit thicker and the bitterness from alcohol is a slightly discouraging at start.
