Commercial Description:
Brewed by Mikkeller at Nøgne Ø, Norway.
This imperial Oatmeal stout is brewed with one of the world’s most expensive coffees, made from droppings of weasel-like civetcats. The fussy Southeast Asian animals only eat the best and ripest coffee berries.Enzymes in their digestive system help to break down the bean. Workers collect the bean-containing droppings for Civet or Weasel Coffee. The exceedingly rare Civet Coffee has a strong taste and an even stronger aroma.
Ingredients : Water, malts, hops, yeast and Vietnamese ca phe chon coffee.

Thanks to whomever brought this to the O-Town throwdown in March. Aroma is coffee, vanilla and chocolate. Flavors are more coffee, roast and cocoa. I was a little underwhelmed with it, though, after all of the hype. It was a great coffee stout, but I don’t think the weasel poop really offered anything.

Aroma is a nice mix of sweet, roasty malts and coffee. Pours black with tan head. Flavor is smoky darkness, accented with what smells like Vietnamese Coffee (having been a coffee geek while spending a month in Vietnam, all over, I know of what I speak. Their coffee has a taste all in its own, civet or not.) Very bittersweet, but ends on a dry note. Has that same malt profile as other Mikkeller beers - but has this weird smoky wisp to it. Very nice! Tobacco, cigar and cherry notes round this one out.

Bottle from the Orland Park, IL, Binny’s: This glops out of the bottle as a thick, dark brown liquid. It did turn black in the glass, topped, albeit breifly, by a chocolate colored head. It had aroma of coffee that was pooped out of small mammal butts. (Actually, that was my second guess. Rather than Vietnamese ca phe chon coffee, I thought it might have been Tasters Choice.) Actually, it smelled of dark coffee and pungent nuts, anise, burnt brown sugar, bakers chocolate, roasted malt, and a whiff of cigar smoke. The mouthfeel began with an oatmeal creaminess but developed an astringent side by the third or fourth taste. By the end of the bottle, it was downright bothersome. The flavor was accurately reflective of the aroma, save that the alcohol made its presence known and there was a small mammal butt bitterness at the end. Okay, okay. Scratch the weasel’s butt. It was actually more of a charred wood bitterness. Not a bad drink over all, but I was raised on less pretentious coffee.

thick beer which pours out black-hole black with a very fine layer of tiny tan bubbles. when i imagine drinking coffee brewed with beans that were pooped out of some small mammal’s ass, there are no constraints on flavor or aroma, and this stout doesn’t disappoint. full of coffee and vanilla, and cascade-like hops aroma, and licorice and brown sugar. less roasted barley than i expected, but the coffee supplements the roast and burnt elements. green and alcoholic in the end. flavor is more strongly coffee-flavored than the aroma, and flavors blend very well. excellent stout on its own, and i don’t think that it needs the gimmicky price tag, which reflects the difficulty of procuring coffee beans out of some little weasel’s turds. seems like coffee that doesn’t involve musteline spoors from the asian jungles would work just as well, and might bring the price down to a point where i would drink this beer again. that said, it’s a great beer, if a little boozy.

Frothy, light brown head on top of a nearly black pour. The aroma didn’t floor me; slightly woody coffee aroma didn’t seem too complex. The flavor, on the other hand, was fantastic. Just a delicious pure coffee flavor with licorice and molasses. Superb.

Poured Black with a large brown head and persistent brown ring. Nice coffee aroma that dominates most of the aroma. Sweet nose with some cocoa. Roasty malt with a moderate sweetness and mild coffee. Smooth mouthfeel. Medium to full bodied. Warming in the chest.

Thanks to OSCF for sharing this one! Dark brown pour with nice retention and spotty lace. Nice coffee character on the nose. Creamy mouth feel with lots of chocolate and thick heavy roast. I picked up some light coffee on the finish, but not as much as I expected.
