Bottle from Dranken Geers, Oostakker, Nr Gent June 2013 consumed at home in company of Casey & Traci 06.07.13 Pours black with dark brown head, looks good. The nose is a good combination of vanilla and coffee with a goodly dollop of cream and chocolate or milky, creamy chocolate to be more precise. Whilst I like this beer and whilst I like the vanilla, maybe the vanilla is deployed just a little too heavily here, nice but a little overkill. I think the strength is very well masked I really didn’t believe it was that strong. Good beer, very good in fact, smooth, indulgent and really tasty, just not quite great. A8 A4 T7 P4 Ov15 3.8

In bottiglia, a casa, pinta inglese. Colore nero impenetrabile.

Part 2 of a 3 part Mikkeller Beer Geek vanilla stout review. 330ml bottle from Prairie Trail Hy-Vee, in a Sam Smith pint glass. AROMA Muted aromatics, really have to get my nose down in the glass to get a whiff, or maybe it’s the last beer still lingering on my palate. Coffee beans, cocoa and Hershey bar. More Hershey bar than anything else. APPEARANCE Pours darker and more coffee-like than Mikkeller Dessert. No head to speak of, only a thin layer of bubbles that dissipates in the distance from the kitchen to the den. TASTE Flavor is much better than smell. Really well integrated medium roast coffee and chocolate bar with a soft airy vanilla finish that lingers a long time without being offensive. PALATE Medium to full body lightened by vanilla, slick and mouthcoating with a long finish. Not a creamy or sticky beer. OVERALL Very good. The aromatics are simpler and more subdued than Mikkeller Dessert and were difficult to tease out on its heels, but Vanilla Shake is really quite a good well-integrated beer with better balance than most stouts, and not as much cavity-causing potential as Mikkeller Dessert. Another excellent vanilla flavored stout.

Bottle from Bottledog. Looks beautiful. Opaque very dark brown, brown tan head, oily and a little thick in the glass. Nose wrong foots me slightly. Big liquorice, molasses, salty, yeast extract, roasted malt, black sugar., black coffee, aged wood barrel. I was expecting lots of sweetness and vanilla but it’s quite subtle dark chocolate, vanilla. Taste is yeast extract, liquorice, salty, molasses, black coffee lots of roasted malt, dryish but also black sugar sweetness and vanilla and aged wood barrel. It’s good but not blowing me away.

Draught at Mikkeller Tokyo. Tons of vanilla, feels like ice cream, oreo cookie, notes of coconut and raisin, long sweet finish. I guess it does feel like a Vanilla Shake, but not really my thing and not very beer-like.

Tap at Tokyo. Black and shiny with lace. Huge vanilla nose, a bit raspy, chocolate, rum, coffee. Too heavy on the additives. Very chemical tasting, vanilla is harsh and overdone. Don’t dig it.

Bottle by private import thx Alex A: dark chocolate, roastiness, light vanilla, some caramel app: pitch black small beige head t/p: full body with long bitter finish. Velvety texture. O: as it warms the aroma get more intense, full of chocolate and roastiness. A beer worthy of taking it’s time to drink quite complex.
