33 cl single bottle into a shaker, purchased at Hy-Vee Wine & Spirirts - Muscatine. Black appearance with a lingering, lacy, light brown head. Aroma of coffee, roasted malt, chocolate fudge, caramel, vanilla, cocoa, light toffee, earthy hops and light pine. The flavor adds some zesty hops, a moderate bitterness, a mild sweetness and a lingering, light dry finish. Rich and balanced with a medium body. This is really good, probably my favorite "Black IPA".

Aroma is a fine mixture of hops and coffee, earthy hops, robust malt, chocolate, pine, really really complex. Appearance is black, thick, light brown head. Taste is unbelievable, wonderful coffee, chocolate, cookie, roasted malt, followed by pine, bitter earthy hops, wow. Mouthfeel is incredibly thick, lingering hop and malt bitterness, light to medium carbonation. Overall, holy fuck balls I am enjoying this one, and I’m not huge about this style. Easily the best black IPA I’ve tasted.

6/18/2010 10:51:10 AM Bottle from Bierkoning. Dark brown body with thinnish oaky head. Nose of malts, wheat and some chocolate notes. Also grapefruit and citrus. Taste of hops and citrus in the front. Then gets maltier, and chocolatey. Bitter in the finish. An interesting, and wide palette, but very uniform. Not sure this is a Stout either but I quite enjoyed it.

12oz bottle for $6.99. Pours super black with a thin tan head. Big roasty aroma with a touch of coffee and a slight whiff of hop.

A 330ml bottle with surprisingly for Mikkeller, no best before date either on the bottle or cap. Poured into an oversized wine glass. The beer poured opaque black with a slightly less than two finger dark mocha brown head that dissipates quickly leaving spotty lacing. Aromas are mainly roast coffee bean and chocolate, hints of almond and brown sugar with a pine hop background. Flavour is made up of strong coffee bean mixed with pine hop and grapefruit bitterness. A hint of brown sugar sweetness lends a hand to a very nice lasting bittersweet finish. Light to medium bodied with medium carbonation and slight creaminess. Overall, I enjoyed this a lot. It is very well balanced and extremely tasty. I see debate on whether this is a black IPA or just a hoppy stout, but for me, mostly due to its lightness, it’s a black IPA.

Purchased during MLB All Star Week 2015 at Root Cellar in Cincinnati, Ohio. Enjoyed August 18, 2016 in a Mad Tree tulip/snifter. Look - Less than a finger tan head. Oily black. Head settles to nothing. Blotchy lacing. Medium bubbles. Smell - Hop. Bubblegum. Coffee. Cigar. Burnt. Traditional black IPA. Taste - Closer to hoppy porter. Coffee. Char. Malt. Not as hoppy as expected. Bubblegum. Feel - Chewy. Medium to heavy. Carbonation not overpowering. Overall - Not a Black IPA. It is a good hoppy porter/stout.

Pours dark brown, with a whitish tan head. Aroma of hops and rich malts. Taste of oatmeal and hops. Fairly complex, a little hoppier than typical for an oatmeal stout. Still, a thumbs up.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours pitch black with a nice soapy milk chocolate head. Nose is cacao and espresso with some grassy and light citrus notes. Taste is a coffee bomb followed by lots of fresh cut grassiness. There is also a nice chunk of cacao. Very dry on the palate. This is by far the best black IPA I’ve had. Fantastic!
