Bottle, brewed in Norway at Lervig Aktiebryggeri. Pours nearly black with a fluffy dark tan head and carbonation lining the sides of the glass. Aroma of roasty malt with some hoppy brightness coming through. Flavor has some discernible citrus, but the roasted malt and coffee are the main event. Almost a coffee stout with a nice, moderately fruity hop finish.

Is it a black IPA or a stout? Ours like stout, tastes more like IPA. Either way, quite nice. Looking forward to more mikkeller.

Nice dark beer and tan head. Strong smell of pine and juicy hops and faint roasted coffee. The taste is of a high quality black ipa. Pine and roasted malt dominate with the added coffee making this an interesting black ipa. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein schwarzes Bier mit schöner bräunlichen Schaumkrone. Geruch röstmalzig, Schokolade. Geschmack sehr röstmalzig, angenehm cremig, schokoladig, erdig.

This is the first beer by Mikkeller that I have had and hopefully it is not the last. Aroma: coffee, chocolate, citrus A: black, cloudy, minimal head, brown foam T:medium bitterness, light sweetness P:full body, oily feel, average carbonation, long finish. Overall this is an interesting beer that combines the taste of a stout with the hop flavor of an ipa for a very good mix. I think that mikkeller was able to make this mix quite well. I will definitely try more from this brewery.

UPDATED: MAY 22, 2014 My Bottom Line:
Coffee and coniferous notes benefit from a lemongrass-like spicy hoppiness in this cohesive Coffee-Infused Black IPA.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A dollop of foam stays atop the pure blackness.
-The mouthfeel is leaner than I had expected.
-Aniseed notes appear once the hops have died down somewhat (older bottle).
-This one avoids the pitfalls of novelty brews by making sure coffee is toned down.
-Hop aroma and bitterness are both engaging.

Bottles.

Fresh bottle. Pours black with tan head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, raisin and some floral notes. Taste is combination of the aromas with some punchier hops than expected. Simcoe is noticeable here and adds great depth and balance. There is a resin note and some sweetness that blends well with the stronger cocoa/coffee notes. Really smooth and drinks like a 10% despite it’s lower ABV.

Bottle from Jane’s beer store. Great taste, like an imperial stout. Aromas of chocolate, vanilla, liquorice.

Bottle from the internets. Pours a dark opaque black with a thin layer of tan head. Aroma of intense coffee and spices. Taste of coffee, spices (slight ancho chiles maybe?), and dark chocolate.
