Bottle shared at a stout tasting with a few friends. Was told this was Beer Geek Breakfast and thus was blown away when in the aroma I got a ton of hops. Piney hops! HALLELUJAH! Hops, where have you been all afternoon? Then comes the taste which was coffee, dark roasted malt and more coffee. The hops are gone. Mouth feel is so light it is sad. Then I read the label. This isn’t a stout, it’s a black IPA. I take back the palate comments but mark down more for the fact that there are NO hops present in this outside of the nose. Overall, I loath the very idea of black IPAs and since I was rating this per a stout, throw it out.

This brew pours black with a medium tan head that recedes slowly to a film. Patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of piney hops, chocolate and coffee. Medium body with flavors of roasted malt, dark chocolate, resiny hops and more coffee. The finish is roasty with a lingering moderately bitter hops aftertaste. Good beer all around.

Medium sized light brown head with good retention and a thin, sticky layer of lace hangin there. Black colored brew. Nose of vanilla, roast and chocolate with milder piney notes in the background. Med/full body, oily texture with a gentle carbonation. Hops up front on the palate, piney and a little catty, resiny and juicey and if this isnt enough you are then slammed with the roast, coffee and chocolate flavors, caramel and maybe some black patent. Very large chewy flaor profile. The finis is largely bitter and roasty, wow! One tough hombre! Bottle from statelineliquors.

Thanks to aapp for sending out this bottle. Served in a Mikasa tulip. The is an American Black Ale. Pours near black with a long-lasting deep tan head. Strong lacing and a heavy roast and chocolate character in the nose. Good dosing of pine and faint earth. Heavy pine, especially as it warms. Good balance between the pine and roast in the flavor. Medium body with a dry, resinous finish. Fairly bitter, mostly from the hops. Really quite tasty.

Last bottle at Churchkey, shared with Evan and Christopher. Nearly black, medium brown head with reasonable retention. Great balance between the roasty chocolate characteristics and the aroma and bittering hops. Nice example of the style!

big black body, huge tan head, nice lacing, frothy, incredibly sustained... fresh hops, some citrus, lots of coffee, chocolate, roasty.... lively, roasty, super roasty, dry finish, light citrus flavors, some pine, some grass, lots of coffee, some light bitter chocolate notes... medium to medium full bodied... really good, really hoppy stout, im generally put off a bit by the idea of a hoppy coffee stout, but they nailed this one...

Bottle shared with friends for a Mikkeller tasting. Dark black pour with good looking carbonation. Aroma had a good amount of hop presence along with coffee grind and slight chocolate. Flavor was pretty bitter with a slight sweetness on the back end. A very good showing here.

Bottle. Pours a rich black with a very thin tan head. Aroma is strong with coffee and hops. Notes of citrus, dark chocolate, maybe some lactose??, and some vanilla. Complex. Palate is very smooth, considering the level of hops I got in the aroma. Flavor is a little bitter, bringing out some oatmeal. Surprisingly awesome.
