Aroma is heavy hops; resin and citrus and coffee. Taste is hugely hoppy with a nice roasted flavor. Overall interesting good beer.

Great black ipa, doesn’t really taste like a stout. Good roasted flavors in the background

UPDATED: MAY 17, 2012 Bottle shared with friends at tasting. Pours black with medium brown head. Aroma is strong coffee and hops. Flavour is coffee, chocolate, caramel, malt all with a lovely hop bitterness over the top. Well balanced and with low carbonation. A great beer.

50cl bottle pours an oily, opaque black with a brown, thin head. Malty aroma, brown sugar, lightly hoppy, crackers. Flavor is sweet, chocolate, a little citrus, a little vegetal, malty, toast. Full bodied, sweet, lightly bitter finish.

Bottle shared by a friend. Black pour with small beige head now. Aroma of hot, spicy hops and anise. Huge licorice drowns out the coffee. Bitter, boozy, and bold. Flavor of bitter, grassy hops, alcohol, tobacco, and burnt malts. Top hot. This should sit longer to get better if at all. Slick and oily

Pours dark black with nice fluffy caramel colored head from bottle. Aroma has nice notes of green and pungent resin and pine, slight citrusy notes even, with a big coffee note with roast and chocolate in the background. Taste is just as balanced as the aroma, with notes of some pine, resin, some caramel, coffee grounds, roast and bitter hops combine at the end to make a lasting finish. Nice brew!

500ml bottle. Pours pitch black and looks like all the other beer geek varietals sporting a thick tan head that recedes very slowly and leaves excellent lacing. Aroma is definitely greener than the other versions with some fresh herbal hops on top of the regularly scheduled roasted chocolate malts and espresso beans. The taste also starts with some citrus and pine bitterness which then flows into the bitterness provided by the heavily roasted malts and spent coffee grinds. The finish is dry and bitter. The mouthfeel is smooth as silk with strong carbonation and tingly throughout with equal parts coffee and hop bitterness. Another nice installment from Mikkeller in the beer geek series with some fresh green hops adding some complexity to things. I still like the original better though...

Bottle with Carla, Jade and Nathan. Pours an opaque black with dark brown foam. Smells roasty with hints of caramel, java, and hazelnuts. Tastes roasty with plenty of bitterness towards the end. Fells lightly creamy.

Delightful dry stout. Hop was apparent in the early nose, along with coffee and biscuit. Served at room temperature from a 16 oz bottle. Appearance was jet black and a thick fine head that laced the glass nicely. A thin layer of fine foam remained throughout. Taste was strongly hoppy at the outset, with the dry coffee and roasted malts following; but never any malty sweetness. Finish was nutty and continued dry coffee; strongly bitter. Body was medium/full, even when warm. Texture was creamy and well balanced. Carbonization was moderate throughout. This was an IPA in an Irish stout overcoat. Nice. Not my favorite style and therefore a bit more notable that it fared well in the review.
