Bottle at slows bbq, Detroit. Pours thick and black, strong hops on the nose. Flavor is chocolate with a lingering hop finish. Tastes like a young stout, which is the intended flavor, and is actually quite good. Nice balance between the sweet chocolate malts and the strong hop presence.

Dark nearly black pour w/ a huge frothy well laced tan head. First sniff was a floral a big floral hop w/ some hints of citrus, underneath that was a well roasted malt. Palate had some nice viscocity, but lacked the thickness I like in a stout. Some sweet hints of nuttiness that probably come from the oatmeal, a well roasted malt (lots of roast notes) and a pretty big grassy hopping. A nice beer, but not one of my favs and not worth the price tag.

500ml bottle. Pours a dark brown with thin brown head that was quick to fade and scatter to the edge of the glass. The aroma first hits you with a citrus/pine dose of hops but then you pick up on the bitter chocolate and roasted coffee undertones. The flavor is pretty much the same. It reminds me of a dark chocolate covered espresso bean only instead of the coffee bean it is a hop cone. There is a great combination of bitterness from both the roasted malts and the hops that I enjoyed a ton. Fantastic brew that I plan to go buy more of.

500ml bottle from Sam’s, Durham. Body and appearance nicely sumptuous like the regular offerings, and here the dry, sharp, chalky quality of the brew is accentuated by the hops, giving it more of a mild bite on the palate and a tangy flavor. Glad to have given this one a shot, despite the sometimes forbidding price point of these Mikkellers.

Bottle. (Mikkeller rating number 50) Dark brown with a small tan head. Very interesting aroma and taste. Hops with the typical notes of a stout. Some kind of hybrid between a Black IPA and Stout. I liked the smooth and creamy mouth feel on this one. Nice beer!

Countbeer (5337) - Best of E-Town mit 2 Brauhausen, NETHERLANDS - MAY 18, 2011
Draught: Small brown lacing in top of a black beer. Smell hops, chocolate, hints of liquorice and spices. Taste is like a mix of (imperial) stout and (imperial) ipa: hops, light liquorice, chocolate, light citrussy, spices, roasted malts, bitter. Bitter hoppy and black ingredients aftertaste. Low carbo, fuller body, soft tingly mouthfeel and light watery texture.

Shared 0.5l bottle. Pours a deep brown body with a solid tanned creamy head. Aroma is really grassy hops almost herbal-grassy with light green coffee beans, thin chocolate and roasted malts. Body is medium, texture oily to chewy and it’s medium+ carbonated. Flavors are strong coffee-filter, burned toast with a quite bitter hopy finish and a day old-coffee aftertaste, lives up to it’s name.

Bottle. Jet black body, big creamy caramel head. This is one good-looking stout! :-) Nose is roasty malt tones, tar, coffee, grassy hops. Subtle fruity undertows lingering just below the level where I can possibly ID them. Taste is coffee, bitter resinous hops and hints of roasted malts. Again, fruity hop tones come bubbling just beneath the surface. Long, bitter finish. A very good beer.

On tap at Cask Pub & Kitchen on 10 May 2011. Black with a generous beige head. Lovely roast aroma with strong coffee and chocolate notes. Joined by good, firm, resinous hops on the palate. Very rich but not at all sticky. Just have a very minor reservation that the elements didn’t quite fit together perfectly harmoniously. That’s just a tiny quibble though. Extremely tasty but a half was enough - I think I’d struggle to drink this any quantity.

Bottle. Pours dark brown/black with a medium plus beige head. The nose has big roasted malts, black coffee, resiny hops and a hint of citrus. The flavor is similar to the nose, but works a little better for me. The roasted malts, dark chocolate and black coffee work well with the green hops, citrus peel and resin. Medium bodied, nice beer.
