3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
New Beer Distributors, NY 50cl ($10): Pours black with brown head that is quite large. Aroma is coffee, loads of hops, dark chocolate, but just a little, and pine. Taste is quite bitter, even more so than is normal Beer Geek (or at least as well as I can remember). Mouthfeel is pretty velvety. Sustained aftertaste. Plenty of coffee is present. Maybe too much, I suppose. Very little sweetness. Pretty good.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
A 330ml bottle with surprisingly for Mikkeller, no best before date either on the bottle or cap. Poured into an oversized wine glass. The beer poured opaque black with a slightly less than two finger dark mocha brown head that dissipates quickly leaving spotty lacing. Aromas are mainly roast coffee bean and chocolate, hints of almond and brown sugar with a pine hop background. Flavour is made up of strong coffee bean mixed with pine hop and grapefruit bitterness. A hint of brown sugar sweetness lends a hand to a very nice lasting bittersweet finish. Light to medium bodied with medium carbonation and slight creaminess. Overall, I enjoyed this a lot. It is very well balanced and extremely tasty. I see debate on whether this is a black IPA or just a hoppy stout, but for me, mostly due to its lightness, it’s a black IPA.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Purchased during MLB All Star Week 2015 at Root Cellar in Cincinnati, Ohio. Enjoyed August 18, 2016 in a Mad Tree tulip/snifter.
Look - Less than a finger tan head. Oily black. Head settles to nothing. Blotchy lacing. Medium bubbles.
Smell - Hop. Bubblegum. Coffee. Cigar. Burnt. Traditional black IPA.
Taste - Closer to hoppy porter. Coffee. Char. Malt. Not as hoppy as expected. Bubblegum.
Feel - Chewy. Medium to heavy. Carbonation not overpowering.
Overall - Not a Black IPA. It is a good hoppy porter/stout.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours dark brown, with a whitish tan head. Aroma of hops and rich malts. Taste of oatmeal and hops. Fairly complex, a little hoppier than typical for an oatmeal stout. Still, a thumbs up.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours pitch black with a nice soapy milk chocolate head. Nose is cacao and espresso with some grassy and light citrus notes. Taste is a coffee bomb followed by lots of fresh cut grassiness. There is also a nice chunk of cacao. Very dry on the palate. This is by far the best black IPA I’ve had. Fantastic!

Another beautiful Mikkeller’s invention. Pours creamy black with a big brown head. Aroma is coffee, roasted malts. Taste adds chocolate and hops. Creamy, smooth, beautiful.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle at the grandparents- pours opaque black with huge fluffy brown head that settles eventually into a dense ring. Perfect tulip pour. Roasted coffee beans, chocolate malts, some piney hop resin from the simcoe, just appetizing borderline black IPA but the coffee is just right without being astringent and the hop resinous bitterness doesn't overpower. Perfection with this white chocolate cheesecake. Need to workout after this pairing but crap, it's good

Great aromas and flavors of black malts, coffee and piney hops. Truly black with a solid weight but not too heavy. Blended very well.
