3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Purchased at Discount Liquor in Milwaukee. Pours with a generous amount of thick, dense head leaves a beautiful layer of doily-esque lacing. Strong aroma of coffee, butterscotch, caramel, roasty chocolate and some oily hopiness. Hopiness very apparent on first sip; nice bitterness along with a thin coffee roastiness and minerality. More watery in texture than expected after that full smell. Malted, powdery sweetness is faint but a nice undertone. The hops bitterness really dominates, especially in the finish. I can’t really point to anything wrong about the beer, but my own personal preference is for a less watery mouthfeel. Otherwise, the flavors are intense and pretty well-defined.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Tap at Mikkeller Bar, SF. Poured a sexy jet black with a brown creamy head that holds nicely. Aromas showcase strong espresso tones with powdered cocoa and some pine needles. Taste is all about the pine and coffee. Juicy pine needles with a lingering espresso bitterness. Light chocolate coats the backend of the palate. Half black ipa/half stout for me. Fucking great brew.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft at Mikkeller Bar in SF. Pours dark brown with beautiful thick creamy mocha head. Aroma is primarily coffee, some chocolate, and a bit of pine. The first taste is very much like beer geek breakfast, with a ton of cold-pressed coffee flavor, bitterness and all. The "hop" comes into this gradually in the finish, with a lasting hop bitterness. It’s pretty cool, actually, the coffee into hop smooth transition. Almost like alchemy. Medium to full body, smooth, slick texture. Overall: yeah!

Bottle. Pours pitch black with a big creamy mocha head. Aroma is hoppy pine and orange peel, as well as coffee and chocolate. Body is quite full with soft carbonation. Flavour is burned malts with coffee, as well as hoppy notes of orange peel and grapefruit giving a long bitter as well as burned finish.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle snagged from Tipples. Pours pitch black into my tulip with a big fluffy mocha head. Aroma if lemony hops, chocolatey roast that somehow seem to work nicely together. The flavor follows with an initial burst of bitter lemon hop flavor, then fades into big roasty chocolate, and then leaves a strangely lemon chocolate combo on the palate, but more lemon than chocolate. Velvety and smooth mouthfeel, medium carbonation. This is very unique and the only other stout I have had with this level of hops is Darkness, but the flavor profile is totally different. Glad to try it, it is tasty, but I don’t know that I would want this on a regular basis. Kind of like someone poured lemon pinesol in my FIS.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours black with a brown head and aroma of hops and light roasted coffee. Taste has nice hoppy, citrus, grass, grapefruit notes come through first with roasted malt and coffee notes that come in, leading to a dry, hoppy, burnt finish. Nice black IPA, the citrusy hops and the roasted coffee chocolate notes go together nicely

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours dark brown with a light tan head. The aroma has coffee, roast, mild chocolate and light cream. It has a medium body that is lightly rough and has lightly abrasive carbonation. The flavor begins with coffee, earthy hops, roasty malt and cocoa. The finish has lots off coffee bitterness. Pretty nice, but a more coffee than I would have liked.

Très noire. Belle mousse foncé moka. Nez: très torréfié. Forte odeur de café. Bien houblonné. Herbacé. Résine. Grain brûlé. Bouche: ronde et crémeuse. Truffe. Café espresso. Céréale (gruau). Très forte amertume. Houblonné. Chocolat noir. Poudre de cacao. Herbacé. Finale sèche avec une sensation de café corsé. Sublime. Jamais déçu par Mikkeller.
