3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Odysseyalien (19) - New Jersey, USA - NOV 26, 2012A bottle purchased at Ales Unlimited in San Francisco.
I had wanted to try a Mikkeller brew, particularly this barleywine, and I can gladly say that I’ve finally done so.
Labled as an American barleywine, I guess it is though the bottle I had was not overly hoppy as most American barleywines are. There is a hop profile though but it’s not overwhelming. Slightly sweet but not as sweet as some barleywine’s I’ve had. Flavors more pronounced as it warms to room temperature -- raisins on the tongue along with maybe some brown sugar. Not my favorite barleywine but not bad. If I had room in my suitcase to drag more of these back to New Jersey, I would do so. This might improve nicely with a year or two in the cellar.

375 ml bottle purchased at Wine and Cheese Place in 2011. 12% ABV. Pours a hazy chestnut brown with a reddish tint and plenty of floaters. Finger of off-white head that settles into a lasting film that leaves spots of lace in the glass. Really, really nice bourbon barrel character in the aroma; vanilla, toffee, coconut, dates, oak, raisins, and caramel. Bourbon warms the nostrils. Flavor of dates, figs, candy apple, toffee, oak, toast, and some bitter earthiness. Medium-bodied, with a rich, warming mouthfeel and modest carbonation. Still fairly hot for 2 years old. Really nice and tasty, and the aroma puts it over the top.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 bubbleflubber (1423) - Asheville, North Carolina, USA - MAR 24, 2013
Been aging for a few years in my cellar, this pours a murky, milky-hazed mud brown into the glass, with a lot of "floaties". The thin, tiny ring of suds leaves spiderweb lacing down the glass. The nose is of whiskey, caramel and apple cider. Flavors are quite malty; a drier, woody take on the candy-sweet English-style barleywine. Rich and flavorful, there is toffee, caramel, dark fruity esters, a hint of licorice, wood and butterscotch. The finish is of light diacetyl buttery notes and just a kiss of alcohol to provide a prickle of activity. This is oily on the palate; with semi-active carbonation and a full body, it provides a satiating yet vibrant mouthfeel. Complex, and a tribute to the English style, I very much enjoyed this robust offering from Mikkeller. Almost perfect as the brew warms to "near room temperature" levels. Prost!

Den här ölen upplevde jag som hopplöst spretig och obalanserad med kraftiga inslag av jäst i smaken. Men den var rätt god ändå men förbannat kraftig.

Poured into snifter. Pours a murky dark brown color with a nice foamy tan head. Aroma is sweet bourbon mostly mixed with vanilla, citrus, molasses, and oak. Taste is moderately sweet with a great bourbon flavor. Does not overpower like some bourbon beers. Molasses and oak flavors are there throughout and there are some citrus notes in the finish. Finish is pretty smooth, very little alcohol burn. Full body and sticky mouthfeel. Really nice bourbon barrel barleywine.
