Bottle @ home. Clear brown with a beige head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel, dried fruit, notes of vanilla, wood, notes of red wine and alcohol. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Dry and rather bitter finish. 110413

Malty and piney aromas initially, supported by barrels that remind me more of white wine than red. Tastes like a standard American Barleywine: caramel malts atop the boozy, hoppy base with a warming sensation after I swallow.
Barrel character works much better than expected, especially from an inconsistent renegade like Mikkeller. Pleasantly surprised to report that I enjoyed this one.

Fra fat på Cardinaltreff feb-13, kveldens siste av totalt 16: uklar og mørekbrun med beige skum. Det er tydelig allerede i aromaen at rødvinsfatene har gjort sitt, den er preget av både rødvin og eikefat. Men heldigvis er humlen fremdeles til stede, og vitamininnholdet setter seg der det skal.

Wow, must say I was surprised it came out dark amber when i poured this one in a snifter. Smelled the bottle before pouring, smells really aweet, with cherry the most markant. This beer is great for sipping, and can replace red wine in mostly any scenario. As for beer, I like them more distinct, but this is really great craftmanship and well balanced beer.

On tap at Cardinal. Pours deep red/amber with a tiny white head. Aroma of wood, oak, sweet juicy red berries. Taste is vinous, oaky , lots of barrel here. Resinous end, some stinging nice mint at the final, which is lingering, bringing the mouthfeel dry and clean at the end, good one.

On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Hazy dark brown colour, moderate off-white head. Distinct aroma of oak / red wine barrel, a hint of fusel alcohols. Also notes of dark dried fruits. The flavour is very oaky, the red wine barrel does indeed dominate. Decent hops in the finish. Warming mouthfeel. Very tasty and interesting!

Bottle @ home. Dark amber coloured. Fluffy beige head. Aroma: ripe fruits, wood, dryness, spice, caramel. Flvaour: Alcohol, ripe fruits, sweetness, wood, light liqourice. spice. Medium to full bodied. Ends fruity and alcoholdense. Quite nice.

Bottle. Pours a near clear deep amber with no head whatsoever. Aroma has a good amount of sweet grain and caramel with a bit of booze and an underlying light fruit notes with an odd red wine note. Flavor is similar with sweet caramel and sweet grains that kind of clash with the red wine and boozy note.

Very unusual beer, but great taste. Aged in red wine oak barrels. In my top 50 in the world. Very strong, don’t have more than one in an evening.

January 19, 2013 - bottle shared by BVery. Brown pour with some head and spotty lacing. Aroma was caramel, dark fruit and some spice. Taste was consistent with a red wine finish. Nice and smooth with a medium to full body.
