4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours rustic, filthy, cloudy brown with a thick light brown head. Smells surprisingly fresh. The red wine is present already, and combined with the sweetness it’s almost smells like apple pie. The taste is sweet, but works very well with the wine. Toffee and malty. Very nicely executed!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
At home shared with Dan. Small snifters. Pours a muddy brown with a slight head. Aroma is bread, sweet malts, cardboard, dark fruits, merlot grapes, barrel, and vanilla. The taste is bold with a solid barleywine backbone with caramel malts, vanilla, dark fruits, and booze. You also get the red wine grapes and barrel aging smoothness. Finish is wine flavors with a solid booziness. Very well balanced and flavorful. Medium to full body, moderate carbonation. I really like this.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Malty and piney aromas initially, supported by barrels that remind me more of white wine than red. Tastes like a standard American Barleywine: caramel malts atop the boozy, hoppy base with a warming sensation after I swallow.
Barrel character works much better than expected, especially from an inconsistent renegade like Mikkeller. Pleasantly surprised to report that I enjoyed this one.

bottle 2012 shared with BBGTC. Pours a deep orange / amber color with a tan, creamy looking head. Malty caramelly aroma and hints of alcohol. Some notes of oxidation and corn. Taste is woody and malty. Hints of leather and grapes. Oxidized notes as well. Full bodied, soft co2 and a slick mouthfeel. Warming finish.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Rating #728, bottle from Toft Vin. Brown beer with a small and dissapearing head. Excellent aroma od vanilla, chocolate, coffee, cocoa, moisty wood and alcohol. Flavor of vanilla, hops, a touch of red wine, wood, smoke, citrus and it is quite dry as well. Finish is roasted and warming with a bit alcohol, smoke and wood. Nice bitternes. One of the most complex finishes I’ve witnessed so far. Could be sweeter and less dry. Nice carbonation but could use just a notch of more sturdy body. Really great beer all in all, though.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Murky dark red pour with a fluffy beige head. Lace, thick. Aroma was big caramel malt, sweet, notes of vanilla, some wood and then some vinous notes. Very intriguing and quite delightful. Flavors were also vinous, very wine like. Not as sweet as I expected although caramel made an impact. Lightly bitter finish, woody and slightly dry. Big wine in the finish. Mouthfeel was super viscous, lightly carbonated but fitting. Not as ’profound’ as the bourbon but absolutely fantastic. Yet another outstanding brew from Mikkeller.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
37,5 cl bottle from ØlKonsortiet. Pours deep ruby red with a nice off white head. Aroma is very spicy and very dominated by the barrel treatment - I'm thinking a spicy Temperanillo. Unripe red grapes, oak, sour red currants, raspberries. The classic barley wine characteristics if caramel and dark fruits are completely absent and have been replaced by a wealth og ripe red fruits and berries. A brief hoppiness when it's swirled. The taste is quite perplexing. The barrel is also the main attraction here, and it seems that it as brought some brettanomyces into the beer. A bit funky and then just full of unripe red grapes, red berries and then an astringent side to it, spicy and red wine-ish. This tastes more like a strong Belgium brett infused ale with raspberries aged on spanish wone barrels than a barley wine. But I quite like it. Very unique and interesting.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12.7oz bottle from west lakeview liqours. pours a murky orange-copper with a thin, bubbly, off-white head leaving sticky, dripping lace on the glass. aroma is great with big notes of vanilla, sweet oak, and toffee backed by fresh, piney, hop esters, red berries, and tart red wine with hints of gingersnap cookies, brandied figs, and sweet malts. flavor is damn tasty as well, but a bit tame compared to the aroma, with sweet oak, vanilla, and red wine backed by toffee candy, pine esters, and sugar cookies with subtle touches of raisin, fig, and cake crust. palate is full bodied with smooth carbonation and a sweet, dry, fruity finish. overall, a pretty tasty brew.
