Pours a cloudy mahogany with a ring of tan head that leaves light lacing. Complex aroma, featuring butterscotch, toffee(these I feel are from the wine barrels), figs, raisins, lactose, biscuits, and a touch of alcohol. Alcohol is more prevalent in the mouth, but so is the yeast. The sweetness is big, the bitterness is minimal. Thick and chewy mouthfeel, and that lingers more so than the toffee aftertaste in the mouth. I loved it! I was lucky to find the last one on the shelf, and if I can get lucky enough to ever see this again, I will re-review a year later.

18/I/14 - 37.5cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker) @ RBBWG III, my place - BB: 27/V/23 (2014-93) Thanks to DomienS for sharing the bottle!

Clear red amber beer, creamy irregular light beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: fruity, malts, some citrus, grains, bit rural. MF: ok carbon, full body. Taste: bit sweet, sugary start, malts, some caramel, hoppy, dried fruits, some citrus. Aftertaste: pretty bitter, sweet and sugary touch, caramel, vanilla, some citrus, hoppy. Complexer than it’s regular version, but I preferred the regular nonetheless.

Bottled. A slightly hazy deep red beer with a lazing light tan head. The aroma has strong notes of alcohol, grapes, and caramel, as well as medium notes of malt and wood. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of malt, caramel, and alcohol, as well as medium notes wine and grapes, leading to a very dry, alcoholic, woody, and bitter finish.

A malty beast of a barley wine that probably would have been better suited to age in a non red wine barrel. Huge nose of candied figs and Cabernet. A shapely body flows over my tongue and reminds me of the cloying palate of a heavy red wine. Figs, oak, black cherries and truck loads of caramel malt dominate the flavor before morphing into a strangely out of place oaky, red wine finish. Strangely unique and in need of a few tweaks.

375ml, pours with a uncharacteristic white head, hints of grape and dark fruits on the aroma, lots of wine influence. A bit sweet on the front end and ends very earthy and dry. Not quite as much wine influence as I’d like or expect.
